Just Another Day

Yesterday morning, I knew Ron was finished.

I was working around the sky, making those last little adjustments that can either finish a painting—or keep you messing with it for another three days.

Music was playing in the Shed. Paul McCartney was singing Another Day.

And suddenly, I got choked up.

I missed Ron.

That was it. My thermometer. Time to take the thing out of the oven.

I always knew these two photographs would become paintings together. Mike’s became Elsewhere. And now Ron has become Just Another Day.

Nearly sixty years ago, my husband, Mike, sat beside the water in Phan Thiết, Vietnam. 🇻🇳 (swipe left)

He was about 25, serving in the military, when someone took this photograph. He remembers the day and that it was peaceful. What he doesn’t remember is what he was thinking.

At the time, I was only in third grade. But while painting Mike, I found myself thinking about who I had been at 25.

We were living very different lives, but I recognized something in his face: transition. Youth. Uncertainty. Becoming.

There are things my younger self would very much like a do-over on.

Life doesn’t offer those.

Painting does.

So I painted Mike.

Remembering March 26 of this year, when I completed I Love You More.

My mother lost her sight later in life, and this painting was inspired by a photograph taken after we attended the opera together. It became a way of preserving a moment that meant so much to us both.

I’m deeply grateful to Independence for the Blind for acquiring this piece. I truly can’t imagine a more meaningful home for it.
