I just can't say this enough! People, please research the handyman you select to do a job for you. I am hearing time after time of handyman asking for payment up front "to purchase the materials they need". I get it that of the handyman is new or working to pay bills, they may not have the expendable cash flow. But instead of giving them the money, consider placing the order for supplies on Lowes/Home Depot and list your handyman as the authorized person to pick up. That way, 1) you know the actual cost, 2) they can not return parts and get the money for themselves, and 3) you are not handing them the money just to never return.
As they say, if it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
