☀️Weather watch: your garden is thirsty!

Our Hoerr Nursery weather watchers are tracking a classic “omega block,” which means we’re settling into a stretch of warm, mostly dry weather with temps in the 80s and spotty rain that's little more than a tease for your plants.

Now is the time for a long, slow soak to help them establish strong roots and thrive during the heat ahead. Give them regular water any time that we don't get at least an inch of rain, and if you want to go the extra mile...Ernesto swears that singing to them helps.

This Memorial Day, we pause with gratitude for all who served.

In this family photo, circa 1944, Rudy Hoerr is pictured in his military uniform, holding his daughter Linda. He stands between his grandfather and his father, David August Hoerr, the founder of Hoerr Nursery. In the background sits Rudy’s younger brother, John Hoerr, who would later become part of the nursery’s second generation of owners.

Rudy returned to Hoerr Nursery after WWII and worked a long career as a draftsman, while his brother Irv was killed in action as a fighter pilot.

We'll be open for limited hours tomorrow for Memorial Day, and our extended spring hours will continue through the end of May to give you plenty of time to get your garden planted! Regular hours return in June.

Plant your own amazing annual pots using the thriller, filler, spiller method! Here's how:

1. Choose at least one category of each plant, making sure that they will grow in the conditions where you plan to put them.
2. Start with a tall thriller in the center or back, depending on whether the pot will be seen from all angles.
3. Add fillers to make the pot full and lush. It's okay to use more than one type of plant in larger pots.
4. finish with spillers that cascade over the edge for a beautiful, finished look.
