How will you celebrate the Vernal Equinox - the first day of Spring?
Take a relaxing walk, survey your garden, order spring blooming plants? Put on your raincoat, reflective gear and a flashlight tonight and look for the salamanders & wood frogs migrating to their vernal pools?

I was just out checking on my overwintered nursery plants. I took a few of the protective leaf layers off to check on them. Many are already green and ready for spring and seemed to be thankful for some fresh air. The Golden Alexanders - Zizia aurea, White Avens - Geum canadense, Golden Groundsel- Packera aurea

are happily bursting with life and I expect they will be ready to be transplanted to your garden as early as April. Remember these have overwintered so they are all set to go into the ground.

The Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List has been updated as of December 8th, 2025, to include three additional species (see below). Species on this list are banned from sale. The ban covers purchase, import, propagation, and related activities, and includes all cultivars, varieties and hybrids of the species listed.

There will be a phase-out period for these newly listed species, so that Massachusetts nurseries and agents can sell off existing stock that was received or propagated before December 8th, 2025. The schedule for this phase-out is listed below:
Alnus glutinosa (black alder, European alder): Phase-out period 12/8/2025 - 12/31/2028
Miscanthus sinensis (Chinese silver grass; Eulalia; maiden grass): Phase-out period 12/8/2025 - 12/31/2026
Rhodotypos scandens (jetbead, white Kerria, jetberry bush): Phase-out period 12/8/2025 - 12/31/2027
Imports of these species from out-of-state growers or sellers are prohibited as of December 8th, 2025 – there is no phase-out period for imports.

For full details, please see this letter. For more information about this and other recent updates to the Prohibited Plant List, click here.
