Mugwort’s awkward teenage phase…

Every year without fail, mugwort decides to confuse everyone.

At this stage, the leaves are soft, rounded, and honestly… looking a little too much like parsley or cilantro for comfort.

But give it a little time.

As it matures, those leaves stretch out, deepen into that classic lobed shape, and the undersides take on that silvery tone mugwort is known for. The scent strengthens too — especially once the weather warms up.

These are all mugwort in the photos — same plant, same stage, just doing its thing.

Also, shoutout to a customer who asked about this — you’re definitely not the only one wondering!

Mugwort just likes to keep people guessing for a while.

It’s easy to manufacture more of something when demand goes up.

Plants don’t work that way.

We’ve seen a steady push toward comfrey this preseason—and at a certain point, there’s only so much we can grow, pot, and move at once.

Nature sets the pace. We just try to keep up.

So when a plant like comfrey starts moving early, it’s worth paying attention to.

Because unlike most things, we can’t just “make more” overnight.

We’re still shipping nationwide, and local pickup will be opening soon.

If comfrey is on your list this year, it’s a good one to plan ahead for.

It’s our second week of shipping plants, and I have to admit I’m a little jealous.

Customers in warmer states are already writing to say they’re worried it might be “too late” to plant.

Too late… in March? What??

Meanwhile here in Missouri I’m doing twice the laundry since we are currently having 40 degree temperature swings.

Comfrey is dominating preseason plant sales this year, making me wonder if herbalists are focusing more on it or if there are a lot of clumsy gardeners out there. Speaking of which, I impaled my own finger yesterday on some electric fencing so who am I to judge?

We’ll open for local plant sales in mid-April, but if you’re nearby and planning a garden this year, you can preorder plants now and reserve what you want before things get busy. Be sure to follow the local page for local pricing at zenobiasgarden.com

Ironically I spent last night planning the hydroponic part of the demonstration garden we will have in our nursery area. The topic was how to grow without hydro pumps, because pumps fail…this was what I woke up to this morning. 😂 I did take immediate action and will post updates on the condition of my poor tatsoi later today.

Update: Looks like we made a full recovery, yay!

I believe the plants know spring is coming.
This one is in my basement. No windows. No grow lights. Nothing dramatic has changed down there.
And yet — in the past couple of weeks it’s tripled in growth and now seems determined to leave its pot.
How do they know?

Here is a baby ashwagandha - a plant that is getting a lot of attention lately. While it may not look like a powerhouse, ashwagandha is in a lot of studies related to improving your ability to handle stress. It is an ingredient in many sleep formulas, and is believed to support your nervous system. We will have a limited supply of ashwagandha to sell locally or ship around mid April after the last frost date. These guys are native to Africa and India and don’t think much of Missouri weather. ☃️ That being said, they grow well here as an annual and the root is the part most commonly used, so they are a great addition to the garden!

We heard the spring peepers this week. I don’t know why, but I always feel a rush of joy when I hear their first song.

Growing up, I was told that spring peepers come out three times before spring actually sticks - with a freeze in between each appearance.

Anyone else counting?

Is anyone else noticing the undeniable signs of spring coming? Late last night I heard geese flying north…music to my ears! Next up will be spring peepers. All of this energy has us ready for plant season. A new addition to our greenhouse is African Blue Basil — a medicinal basil that doesn’t grow from seed, and wow does it smell great! We will start shipping this year March 9, and our local nursery will open April 4th. Take a sneak peek at what we have growing at zenobiasgarden.com — new arrivals added weekly. If you’re from Perry County or in the neighborhood, make sure to follow the local shopping link for pricing and plants in stock.
