Plant of the Week - Day 5

Salvia dorrii - purple sage

This plant is a pollinator powerhouse!

A solid win for nectar-seeking insects and hummingbirds, purple sage provides a consistent source of food during its blooming period.

Not only is Salvia dorrii a source of sustenance, but also provides integral habitat with its mature, dense growth pattern.

If you’re looking for an herbivore-resistant plant, this is your pot of gold. The aromatic and tough leaves are a deterrent and rarely preferred by deer or rabbits.

Plant of the Week - Day 4

purple sage -or- Salvia dorrii

Environmental Needs:

Purple sage prefers very well-drained, arid soil. Exposure to high temperatures is not an issue for this hardy plant.

Though a slow-grower, once mature Salvia dorrii is a stunning, drought tolerant small shrub.

Be aware that overwatering will easily bring an end to this plant.

Blooms:

Salvia dorrii, or “purple sage” flowers nestle in the colorful bracts. This can make blooms spikes seem more showy than the flowers themselves.

In the PNW, purple sage is known to bloom late spring through early summer. Flowers are deeply blue-violet and bloom in dense clusters that rise above the leaves.

Both foliage and flowers are highly aromatic with a strong sage-like scent.

Plant of the Week - Day 5

Lewisiopsis tweedyi - Tweedy’s lewisia

Wildlife Benefits:
As with many plants that have delicious blooming flowers, Tweedy’s lewisia is a necessary food source for early pollinators including native bees and syrphid flies.

Browsing animals such as American pika, mule deer and elk love to munch on the fleshy leaves of Tweedy’s.

According to Bubelis, 1968 and Paghat n.d., Lewisiopsis Tweedyi seeds have a sweet honey scent that attracts ants.

Said ants have been known to carry up to five seeds at a time, all the while dispersing them for future growth.
