Sometimes it only takes one 🌺
Out of all the poppies I planted, only one decided to return this year, but what a show she’s putting on! Bold, vibrant, and standing tall like she knew she had something special to prove.

Gardening has a way of reminding me that success isn’t always in the numbers. Sometimes it’s in that one beautiful bloom that thrives against the odds and brings you joy every time you pass by.
Nature always gets the last word… and this year, she said “look at me.” ❤️

Anyone else have a “just one, but WOW” moment in their garden this season?

🌿 Philly Garden Mystery Solved! 🌿

Hey J & J Garden Club family! I stumbled across this absolute stunner hidden away right here in Philadelphia, and I just had to share it because I have never seen one growing in the city before.

Take a look at the second picture, the leaves are so massive they make my hand look tiny! It feels like something straight out of a prehistoric jungle. 🦖🦖

After a little digging, it turns out this is Giant Butterbur (Petasites japonicus), also known as Fuki. It’s native to stream banks in East Asia and loves deep shade and tons of moisture. Since our intense Philly summer heat usually wilts massive leaves like this, it must have found the perfect, cool microclimate tucked away near these brick pavers to get this huge!

It spreads via underground running roots and can get pretty aggressive if it's happy, but wow... what an incredible shade accent.

Has anyone else in the club ever grown this or spotted it around Philly?

Okra (especially great in heat)

🌶️ Bonus (If You Have Space)
These are usually transplanted, but you can still direct sow:

Regrow Bok Choy from Root Cutting!

I regrow bok choy the simplest way possible, no water rooting needed. I just place the root directly into soil, making sure it has good contact while keeping the tops exposed. It quickly pushes out fresh new growth, turning kitchen scraps into a continuous harvest.

Meet Linda 🌵

Living in the Philadelphia area, I never imagined I’d be growing a cactus outdoors through all four seasons, but here she is, thriving.

I named her Linda after a dear friend and mentor who embodied true resilience. No matter the conditions, she stood strong, adapted, and kept growing… just like this beautiful plant.

A little reminder that strength can be quiet, steady, and rooted in simply continuing to grow no matter what 🌱
