We are excited to share that The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Tech has been selected for the 2025 cohort of Case Study Investigations with the Landscape Architecture Foundation!

We are partnering with faculty and students at the University of Georgia - College of Environment + Design to study the performance and impacts of this groundbreaking project, which paved the way for net-positive design and construction in the hot, humid south. The project is certified through the Living Building Challenge, which requires net-positive energy and water use, non-toxic and locally sourced materials, urban agriculture, educational and biophilic elements, as well as many other imperatives.

We can’t wait to report back on the findings! Thank you to LAF and all of the wonderful sponsors for continuing to support this critical program.

Martha Eberle, PLA, ASLA, Director of Andropogon’s Raleigh office, will be joining Jennifer Dowdell from Biohabitats and Claudia West from Phyto Studio to re-present their session on restoration and biodiversity from the 2024 ASLA conference in Washington, DC. We hope you can tune in on Monday, 12/16 at 1 PM!

From :

“How do we approach restoration when baseline conditions are constantly changing? What should we even be restoring to? In the era of climate change, we must engage new strategies to build biodiversity and improve resilience in our landscapes and communities.” — Martha Eberle, ASLA, PLA, Andropogon Associates, Ltd.

The ASLA Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee has organized a nine-part webinar series: Biodiversity and Climate Action 101 for Landscape Architects.

Register for the last webinar — Restoring to What? Addressing Biodiversity in the Era of Climate Change — on December 16 at 1 PM EST.

Join Martha; Jennifer Dowdell, ASLA, Biohabitats; and Claudia West, ASLA, Phyto Studio. This webinar is free for ASLA members and $50 for non-members. It offers 1.0 PDH (LACES/HSW).

Out of office but not out of mind 📬 We're so thankful for all the collaborators and community members that we've had the pleasure to work with this year!

We know that our design is as only good as our team so big thank you to everyone in our zoom meetings, site visits, and conference chats that share our mission in implementing people-centered, climate-forward projects 💚 We'll be ready to roll up our sleeves again next week but until then - Happy Thanksgiving Weekend 🦃

We are so honored to have our work at the Washington National Cathedral’s Olmsted Woods featured in the October issue of ! A big thank you to Bradford McKee for writing such a thoughtful and thorough article. We are grateful for the hard work of our collaborators at and , and, of course, for the ‘s ongoing stewardship of this special place.

“…Olmsted couldn’t have foreseen the effects of climate chaos—of greenhouse gases that would wrap the globe and tax the ecology of this and every other forest on earth. The hardened environment of Olmsted Woods, the climate precarity, and the wear of visitor traffic around the Cathedral Close have left the place with just about every affliction known among forests and watersheds across the heavily metropolitan mid-Atlantic region: torrents of stormwater runoff, erosion, stream sedimentation, canopy loss, opportunistic plants, fragmented habitats, and the steady, perplexing demise of its keystone trees.”

“Evidence of the woods’ decline was spelled out earlier this year as part of a long-range reversal strategy by the landscape architects at Andropogon Associates, Ltd. and Meliora Design. The guild first worked with Andropogon 25 years ago, when two of Andropogon’s founders, Carol Franklin and Leslie Sauer, led a restoration plan for Olmsted Woods with civil engineers at Cahill Associates, after an ecological assessment of the site in 1997 by Biohabitats urged immediate action to protect it.”

That’s a wrap! We had such a wonderful time exploring and learning in DC for ASLA 2024. We revisited some past projects, both large and small, with tours at the US Botanic Garden’s Bartholdi Park and the US Coast Guard Headquarters. We collaborated on education sessions addressing restoration in the era of climate change and how to work creatively within tight budgets for nonprofit clients. And of course, we loved catching up with so many colleagues and friends. Thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge and expertise. We’ll see you in New Orleans next year!

Our work at Phipps Center for Sustainable Landscapes is featured in this fall’s edition of AIA Philadelphia’s Context!

“Landscape architect José Almiñana, principal of Andropogon, has been thinking about the relationship between carbon and the landscape for some time . . . ‘We must design the most complex and diverse systems . . . the more complex the community, the greater the capacity to absorb carbon.’ Hundreds of scientific studies confirm this idea: More diverse plant assemblages support higher biomass production and increased carbon sequestration.’

‘A decade after opening, the project has matured into a landscape that feels natural but is, in fact, a series of integrated ecological and constructed systems. CSL is a working environment that includes biodiverse habitats, a net-zero building, and serves as an active carbon sink. The success of the professional collaboration can be measured by the seamlessness of each discipline’s efforts.”

We are so excited to begin construction at this beloved space in the heart of UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus! We’ve been working hard to ensure that the new design highlights the form and diversity of the NC Botanical Garden’s native vine and perennial collections while improving maintenance access and treating stormwater. Stay tuned for more updates! 🔨 🌱

Repost • Coker Arbor update! 📣 Starting this Friday, August 30, the arbor path along Cameron Avenue at Coker Arboretum will be closed through mid-spring so contractors can build the new arbor path and structure.

They’ll begin by creating the new path with a gently sloping grade that’s fully accessible. (The current arbor path ends in a flight of stairs, which makes it inaccessible to many community members.)

Then, this winter, contractors will build the new arbor structure with black locust columns, galvanized steel roof beams, and lighting to illuminate the walkway at night. We expect construction to be complete by mid-spring 2025, at which point the path will be reopened, and our staff will begin replanting native vines, perennials, and shrubs around the new arbor. 🌿

Thank you to the donors from the Class of 1997, the friends of David Robert, and over 300 arbor supporters who have made this project possible!
