As Preservation Month is coming to an end, we want to share that the Mann Older Adult Center & Rivera Recreational Center is one of ’s Grand Jury Award winners!

We worked to reimagine the much-loved facility and renovated both the interior and exterior of the building as well as improved the overall site with new playgrounds, playing fields, and a senior exercise garden. Swipe to see what it looks like now vs how it did in the past!

Yesterday we toured the completed Abigail Pankey Apartments located in Philadelphia’s Mantua neighborhood. Working alongside , we developed 32 two-and-three bedroom apartments with a large community room. We ensured the design would fit gracefully into the existing neighborhood, using similar materials, textures, and colors as well as being carefully placed to prevent the blocking of sunlight from the adjacent community garden.

We’re proud to announce that Westtown School’s Dining Room has been chosen as the Greenest K-12 School Cafeteria by the Green Restaurant Association! Westtown School hosts an on-site composting program, serves vegan and vegetarian meal options, and sources a selection of food locally. We’ve teamed up with to design a green building to reflect their vision for a more sustainable future. Great news for this year’s Earth Day!

We got a chance to gather around our own (conference room) table this week to start off the holiday season 🍂 We held an autumnal office baking contest while celebrating Niyi's truly hard-won journey as an IPAL graduate and as a newly licensed architect!

Niyi also shared some of his thesis project about biomimetic design and the cultivation of living collections for research and education, full of deep research on ecology and indigenous construction. Join us in congratulating Niyi on this milestone! And congrats to our bake-off winners, Jose (flan) and Mel (apple cinnamon rolls with maple icing)👌

Earlier this month, we joined in celebrating the reopening of Kate’s Place! This permanent supportive housing building by Project Home, recognizing both community support and historic preservation, marked a new chapter of hope and stability. Kate’s Place now features nine fully accessible units and all apartments include safety grab bars and mobility aids, making it more welcoming for residents with disabilities. We were proud to have supported such an impactful initiative.

We've been selected again for the AIA PA 2024 EPiC Firm Recognition list! Firms that demonstrate a commitment to the professional development of emerging professionals and young architects are evaluated annually for recognition. EPiC (Emerging Professionals Committee) identifies licensure, leadership, career advancement, and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as four critical areas for recognition.

As a bigger "small firm," we like to have a mix of one-on-one, group, and staff-wide time dedicated to internal mentorship, AXP/ARE development, and professional growth among staff of all experience levels.

EPiC firms will be announced during the broacast for 2024 AIA Architectural Excellence Awards on December 3. Link to the event can be found in our linktree in bio!

CICADA is proud to share that the substantial renovation of Mann Rivera Rec Center has recently earned LEED Gold certification for Building Design + Construction!

The Mann Older Adult Center and Rivera Recreation Center has been an important part of the Fairhill Neighborhood since its creation in 1975. It is PPR's only combined youth-and-senior center, and one of the largest Rec centers in Philadelphia. Building envelope and mechanical system upgrades were used to greatly improve energy efficiency, and other design efforts towards sustainability included drought-tolerant plantings and rainwater management.

Yesterday, the Church of Christian Compassion celebrated breaking ground on their new 38-unit affordable senior housing development in Cobbs Creek. Our design team was honored to join for the occasion, and hear from PA House Speaker Rep. McClinton in support of the ministry's project. Much thanks to Pastor Terri and Pastor Herndon!

Fun fact: this block is part of the Cobbs Creek Suburban Automobile Historic District, so the project will also be celebrating its completion with a block party to commemorate that history.

About this time last week, CICADA attended the —this year, hosted just a short walk from our office in Center City! Learning alongside other leaders in the higher education community has been inspiring for our Education Studio to deepen our understanding of past lessons learned and present challenges in higher education planning. We also had fun touring some local campuses and connecting with friends old and new!
