STAFF SPOTLIGHT — As Visualization Manager for AS+P, Justin Nickerson, RA, NCARB, creates digital renderings of our residential architecture designs. Clients can see photorealistic renderings of the designs from any angle, elevation, time of day, and with different features or materials – interior or exterior. They offer clients simplified decision making.

"The renderings help the client see their project in a realistic way. It's their first view of the potential finished home. It helps them understand materials, colors, textures, etc.," says Nickerson.

Nickerson started with AS+P as one of the architectural staff. As his expertise in creating renderings increased, he approached AS+P's partners about leading a more robust in-house visualization team.

"I've always been drawn to the graphic side of architecture — sketches, competition boards, etc.," says Nickerson, “so I gravitated towards creating successful renderings that convey the design of a project to the client, to help them fully know what their project can look like."

In contrast, Nickerson’s interests outside of work are analog. He and his wife often travel abroad, exploring à pied picturesque settings in forests and mountain areas, and taking occasional gear-intense excursions like waterfall rappelling and ziplining. “Remote, quiet, nature = true relaxation and happiness,” he says.

Today is National Drawing Day. Here’s a selection of our architects’ sketches of recent projects.

Changes to the design process are coming faster and faster. Architects have been drawing by hand for ages, using computers for 30 years, and are starting to adopt AI.

Says Mark Asher, “I am old enough to draw, young enough to use a computer, and lucky to do both, as one informs the other.”
