Last Neanderthal Home Maintenance & Drain Cleaning

One question I get all the time is what siding lasts the longest with the least amount of maintenance.
The real answer, in my opinion, is glazed brick, also known as enameled brick.

These bricks start out like normal clay bricks, but then they get coated in ceramic and fired so hot that the surface literally turns into a glasslike shell. It’s tough, impermeable and basically laughs at weather.

They were super popular in the 1920s and you can still find hundreds of buildings around New Jersey covered in the original glazed brick, still looking brand new a century later.

They’re still made today by several manufacturers. While a regular brick might cost twenty five cents to a dollar, glazed bricks usually run two to six dollars depending on the color.

Out in the real world, nothing else used as siding has held up this well. Zero maintenance, just pressure washing as desired. No fading, no peeling, no rot, no drama. Just a shiny, rock solid exterior that refuses to age.

How old is your deck?

Pre-1980's, most decks in the region were fitted with standard-depth 2x lumber boards. Since the 1990's, most decks have been built or refitted with slightly thinner and arguably sturdier 5/4" treated decking board.

The transition from using standard 2x lumber, like 2x6 or 2x8 (about 1.5 inches thick), to 5/4-inch decking boards (roughly 1 to 1.25 inches thick) for residential decks started picking up in the late 1980s and early 1990s in North America. It wasn’t an abrupt change but a gradual shift.

Back in the mid-20th century, decks were typically built with 2x lumber because it was strong, widely available, and worked well for outdoor use when treated. However, 2x boards were heavier, costlier, and more likely to warp or cup over time. By the late 1980s, improvements in pressure-treated wood and milling techniques made 5/4-inch boards, usually 5/4x6 (about 1 inch thick by 5.5 inches wide), a popular choice. These boards were designed specifically for decking, offering a thinner, more affordable, and easier-to-work-with option that was still durable.

Rusticated Concrete Block homes peaked in popularity between 1890's and 1950's. Warren and Hunterdon counties are home to a sizable number of them.

Most have survived with intact shells without the use of rebar, thanks to the sheer weight and density of these blocks.

Older masonry construction in New Jersey often appears flawless because these walls were engineered to rely primarily on the inherent strength of their mass and the quality of their mortar joints, rather than on visible reinforcement like modern rebar systems.

Modern concrete blocks are significantly lighter and more hollow as a result of weight optimization.

Rusticated concrete block was a popular building material for houses, garages, and farm buildings around 1890 to 1930. Learn more here!
