The boss showed up at the job site today to inspect. 👶 There were some indicators of squirrels 🐿️ chewing the cambium that I could see from the ground, but oh wow this is not good. ⚠️ This pruning job turned into an urgent weight-reduction 🏋️and stabilization job 🪢. We’ll return next week to remove the remainder of the branch and finish up with pruning. 🪓 🌳

Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is known for establishing itself on nurse logs, and old stumps. In the coastal forests of Oregon and Washington if you see a tree growing atop an old stump, it is probably a Western Hemlock! But the tables were turned here on this job from earlier in the week. This old Hemlock was the host to several other plants. This spot alone, 25 feet up, had ferns, evergreen Huckleberries, Elderberries and fungi!

A slightly different perspective as a tree is felled.

The tree that I am filming from had its root plate lifted up from the December 17-18th storm. It was hung up in another, leaning toward some structures on the property. The upheaval of roots in this one disturbed the roots of the tree Jacob is felling. So, it too was removed for safety.

Felling an Oregon White Oak staub with a backwards lean, power lines to the left, power lines behind, shed to the right, on a slope above a shop, and two stumps in the lay.

We stacked brush and a log on the shoulder of the hill to prevent it from rolling down into the shop. The staub on the side also helped keep it from rolling. Using a conventional cut kept it higher on the stump for longer so that it didn’t teeter over the stumps in the lay. Sniping the stumps also helped to drive the butt down the hill, so it wouldn’t jump up and hit the pillars under the shed. A rope pulled by the excavator and a narrow hinge made sure it was committed and would pop the hinge at the right time.

THROWBACK Thursday: To a day when it was raining, but the soil was still dry. This job is a great example of where we think outside the box to solve a problem. Another tree service said that a nearby Maple tree would need to be removed, to keep the roots from damaging the foundation. The customer was hoping to save the tree, so instead, we installed a root barrier. When the roots hit the barrier, they turn downward, diving low enough to avoid damaging the foundation. The tree and foundation are saved and the customer is delighted!

This Valley Ponderosa Pine was one of 3 large trees that fell on the golf course during the 12/17/25 storm. As you cut back a fallen tree, it has the potential to right itself back up from the weight of the root plate. At this point, the tree as already righted from laying horizontal to 45 degrees. It is important to hire a professional to do this; when cutting a heavily weighted piece of trunk wood, the bottom can release and catapult, throwing the saw or throwing you. This one had already found equilibrium and did not settle any more. For size context, the bar on that saw is 36”!
