Fall & Winter Land Clearing in Midcoast Maine

The best time to clear land is the season most people overlook. Once the leaves drop and the ground firms up, crews can see the whole site, heavy equipment moves with less rutting and soil damage, and your lot is cleared and ready the moment the spring building season opens.

Hawkes Tree Service handles full land clearing and site prep, from house lots and driveways to larger acreage, solar sites and timber harvesting. Our crews and equipment are booking fall and winter jobs right now, and those dates go fast. Waiting until spring means waiting in line behind everyone else.

Planning to build, expand or open up your property next year? Get on the calendar now.

Severe winter weather conditions, including high winds, subzero temperatures, ice, and heavy snow accumulation, can present significant threats to tree stability, compromising your property's safety.

We recommend engaging a certified arborist to conduct a thorough property assessment to ensure tree safety.

Throughout the seasons, our team remains dedicated to addressing all your tree service needs and providing expert care for your property.

Cooler weather is headed our way this weekend, which means you might be thinking about how to stay warm on your next outdoor adventure. ️🌡️🔥🪵 If a campfire is part of the plan, remember: firewood can carry invasive insects and diseases to new places. 🪲 So if you’re camping, heading upta camp or planning a backyard fire, remember: buy it where you burn it! One of the easiest ways to help protect Maine’s forests is to buy firewood at the location where you’ll actually burn it rather than bringing it from home.

Stay cozy, and help keep Maine’s forests healthy! 🧡🍂

Waterfront Tree Injections in Midcoast Maine 🌊🌳

Treating trees right on the shoreline takes a different approach. Maine law prohibits spraying for Browntail Moth within 50 feet of the high water mark, but trunk injections are allowed because the treatment goes directly into the tree, not into the air or water.

This job was less than 50 feet from the shore. The tree draws the treatment up through its own system and carries it to the leaves where pests feed, with no drift and no runoff into the water.

Fall is a smart time to act. Young Browntail Moth caterpillars are feeding now, before they settle into their winter webs in October. A fall treatment paired with a spring follow-up gives waterfront trees the strongest protection heading into next season.

Our licensed team handles every treatment in line with Maine regulations, so you can protect your trees and the water they overlook.

WINTER MOTH WORKSHOP

Late October is a great time to learn about winter moths and prepare for their arrival. Adult winter moths typically become active in late November and can remain active through January whenever temperatures are above freezing.

Winter moth larvae feed on many of Maine’s deciduous trees and shrubs, including oak, maple, apple, elm, ash, crabapple, cherry, and blueberry. Repeated heavy infestations can lead to branch dieback and even tree mortality.

Join the City of Bath and the Bath Community Forestry Committee for a free community workshop to learn how to identify signs of winter moth infestation and help protect Bath’s trees and shrubs.

Wednesday, October 21
9:00 AM
BCFC Nursery at Oak Grove Cemetery
Enter from Old Brunswick Road at the Oak Grove Cemetery entrance, just past the middle school when leaving town.

During this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about:

• Signs of winter moth infestation
• Risks to trees in our community
• Integrated pest management strategies
• Using sticky trap barriers to help manage adult winter moths

The workshop is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. It will run for up to two hours.

Parking is available at the nursery and along the cemetery access road. Handouts will be available to take home, along with additional resources from the Maine Forest Service.

Questions? Contact the Bath Public Works Department at (207) 443-8357.
