Before we picked a cabinet color, countertop, backsplash or hardware, we had much bigger questions to answer.

How should this kitchen function?

Where do we need storage? How should people move through it? What isn't working now? Where should appliances live? How will the cabinetry relate to the architecture?

The finishes are the fun part.

But the decisions made before them are usually what determine whether a kitchen renovation really works.

That's the part of interior design you don't always see in the finished photos.

Labor Day feels like a good reminder that your home shouldn't just look good. It should make your life better.

A backyard where everyone ends up gathering. A firepit where you actually want to stay awhile. A dining table that gets used instead of admired from across the backyard.

That's always the goal.

Beautiful, yes. But comfortable, personal, and designed for real life.

Hope you're spending the long weekend somewhere that feels like home.

If you’re investing in your home, it’s natural to wonder how those decisions will affect its value.

But the answer isn’t as simple as choosing timeless finishes or making everything appeal to the next buyer.

One of the first things I ask during a consultation is, “How long do you plan to live here?” Because that answer absolutely influences how I approach the design.

If this is your forever home, I want to design it for you. If you think you’ll sell in five years, we may be a little more strategic about some of the expensive, permanent choices.

Neither means boring. It’s about knowing where to invest, where to take risks, and when resale should be part of the conversation.

I’m getting into all of it in our latest blog post, How Interior Design Impacts Home Value.

If everything is the statement, nothing is the statement.

One of the hardest parts of interior design is knowing when to stop. In this Scottsdale living room, the stone fireplace and oversized light fixture bring plenty of presence, so everything around them gets to be a little quieter.

Warm wood, soft textures, simple styling, and just enough contrast to let the architecture do the talking.

Sometimes good design is knowing when to pull back.

A room doesn't have to be dramatic to be memorable.

Sometimes it's the quieter details that make a space feel really good. Warm wood, layers of texture, the right proportions, a little contrast, and pieces that feel collected rather than perfectly matched.

No big "wow" moment needed.

Just a bedroom that feels warm, comfortable, and like somewhere you actually want to end the day.

One of my jobs as an interior designer? Knowing when to tell you NOT to spend the money.

Not everything needs to be custom, upgraded, ripped out, or replaced. Sometimes the best design decision is knowing what to keep and where your budget will actually make a difference.

Because "more expensive" and "better design" are definitely not the same thing.

A lot of progress has happened at our Paseo Rodando project this summer, and this kitchen is really starting to come together.

We’re so excited to be working with Gina Halland | Kitchen and Bath Design in Scottsdale, AZ, who are handling all of the custom cabinetry throughout the space. Taking the cabinetry all the way to the ceiling made such a difference in the scale of the room, and we are loving the custom cabinet color against the new tile.

Wait till you see the arched alcove over the range, with an amazing custom detail by Carmen Illustrates still to come. And the old desk area? We gave it a much better job. The tall closed cabinetry will hide alcohol from the grandkids, while the open side will become a coffee bar.

Still to come: the island, lighting, appliances, and plenty of finishing details.

One of my favorite client texts. 😂

We finished this bathroom about two years ago, and while looking for inspiration on Houzz for her son's new home, she stopped on a bathroom she loved...
..only to realize it was her own. 🤍

I don't think there's a better compliment than that.

Has anyone else ever accidentally saved a photo of something they already own? 😂

The greatest compliment isn't that a project is beautiful. It's when a client trusts you with their home again and again.

Reviews like this mean so much because they speak to more than the finished photos. They reflect the experience, the process, and the relationships we build along the way.

To Eileen, thank you for trusting us through multiple projects, from styling to a full kitchen remodel. It has been such a privilege to help shape your home over the years.

If you're looking for a Scottsdale interior designer for a renovation, remodel, or full home furnishing project, we'd love to help you create a home that feels uniquely yours.

Our goal is always to install a room complete, every piece in place, nothing missing. Sometimes, though, a timeline runs long on one item, and then it becomes a real decision, not just a scheduling headache.

We weigh it out: what does it cost the client to store everything and wait for a single complete delivery day, against what it costs to install now and place that one piece later, on a second visit. Storage isn't free, and neither is a second delivery day, so it has to actually make sense.

There's no single right answer. It depends on the piece, the timeline, and what actually serves the client best. That's a judgment call I make on every project, not a rule I apply blindly.

It's a small example of something bigger: a good install isn't just the reveal day, it's the decisions behind it.
