A|R|T is honored to receive Arizona Forward’s Crescordia Award for Environmental Excellence for the Sonoran Studio. We truly appreciate the jury’s understanding of how groundbreaking this project is for regenerative design approaches in the desert Southwest. The collaboration with all our industry and construction partners have truly made it a success.



A|R|T’s new home, the Sonoran Studio, is slated to be Arizona’s first fully certified Living Building. Our motivation is that the project becomes a powerful symbol that communicates the importance of regenerative design in all bio-regions.

Proud to partner with as we wrap up design on their new 38,000 sf headquarters in Mesa, AZ. Their building will be the first non-profit to achieve a net zero energy building.

On Friday morning, we bless the ground that will be home to our new office, the Sonoran Studio. As our first project, the studio will be an example of —a holistic approach to creating buildings that give back more than they take from their inhabitants, communities, and the planet.

We’re excited to be a part of the Sundt Construction, Inc. efforts in realizing the vision of Royal Oaks Lifecare Community over the next couple of years. This project has pivoted, ricocheted, and ultimately survived one of the most unpredictable years in our lifetime and we are still on track to deliver a meaningful and inspirational space for this community. We’re almost completely above ground!

Climbing out of the ground now. Sounds backwards, but next up is the garage lid then 3’ of soil, then our building slabs. This team from IMEG, CVL Consultants, PK Associates LLC, Royal Oaks Lifecare Community, Sundt Construction, Inc., Westwood Professional Services, and Perkins Eastman are pushing through hundreds of weekly calls, emails, texts, and decisions to realize this new part of campus.

If you’ve ever seen the City Hall building in San Bernardino or the US Embassy in Tokyo, then you’ve seen this amazing architect’s work. Norma Merrick Sklarek, is the mind, eyes, and hands behind these iconic 1973 and 1976 landmarks. She passed in 2012 but her legacy lives on through projects like these.

The average ART employee uses about 1,168 gallons of water per day.

Although the number above may initially seem shocking, our water use footprint is a combination of the water we use at home and the water needed to produce the products we purchase. This includes the meat that we eat and the gasoline we use to power our vehicles. Therefore, by looking at our water use footprint, we are able to determine that water plays a significantly larger role in our daily lives than we would have otherwise guessed, because water is used in nearly all essential goods. Taken from Water Calculator (link below), ART collected the answers from each of its employees to come up with the average amount of water each person uses on a daily basis. Even though 1,168 gallons of water per day may seem almost appalling at first, it is actually significantly lower than the U.S. average, which sits at around 1,802 gallons per day. Strikingly – and to no surprise whatsoever – the average use for a global citizen is even lower, mainly in part by the fact that the average global citizen consumes less meat.

Therefore, as a challenge to ourselves and our viewers, ART asks its followers to use the Water Calculator to determine their water use footprint, and to tag us in your response! As a reminder, this is an initiative to educate ourselves and to advocate for water conservatism. No matter how high your daily consumption is, we are not here to shame you. Rather, we are here to shed light on a topic we think is important. Let it be known that water is a resource we cannot live without. As global supplies dwindle each year from pollutants and irresponsible asset management, the changing ideology from water as an infinite resource to that of a finite commodity is a paradigm shift we must respect and encourage.

To put it all in perspective – and because ART is an Arizona-based architecture firm – Watson Lake (located near Prescott, AZ) contains about 20 million gallons of water. If the average ART employee continues to use about 1,168 gallons per day, it would take about 48 ART employees a single year to consume all of the water in Watson Lake.

Furthermore, in order to show complete transparency and that we too can do better, ART will be sharing some of our individual answers to show how we arrived at our average use for the typical ART employee.
