The Arizona Department of Transportation SR-187 Roadway Improvements project consisted of major roadway reconstruction and widening activities designed to improve traffic flow, roadway safety, and long-term corridor performance. The scope of work included over 30,000 cubic yards of excavation and embankment operations, installation of erosion prevention and structural drainage improvements, and placement of more than 30,000 tons of asphalt pavement associated with roadway widening and turn lane construction.
Project activities required extensive grading operations, preparation of subgrade materials, traffic control coordination, utility coordination, and phased paving operations to maintain traffic throughout construction. The work also involved installation of erosion control measures and structural components necessary to protect the roadway infrastructure and adjacent drainage features during and after construction activities.
Successful delivery of the project required a highly coordinated effort between Arizona Department of Transportation, Sunland Asphalt & Construction as the General Contractor, and multiple subcontractor partners responsible for specialized construction operations. Throughout the duration of the project, the team encountered and overcame several unforeseen field conditions and logistical challenges that required continuous communication, schedule coordination, and collaborative problem solving among all stakeholders.
Despite these challenges, the project team maintained progress through proactive coordination, adaptive construction sequencing, and a strong commitment to safety, quality control, and schedule performance. The completed improvements enhanced roadway capacity, improved traffic movements through new turn lane installations, and provided long-term infrastructure benefits to the SR-187 corridor and surrounding community.
