Adding this to our list of services. They already call me a do-nothing friend. Might as well get paid for it.

Tokyo man makes $80K a year renting himself out as a ‘do-nothing’ friend, but won’t befriend clients.

Shoji Morimoto, 40, has found success by renting himself out for $100 per 2-3 hour session, offering companionship without any expectation of real friendship. Since 2018, over 1,000 people, including foreigners and locals, have hired him to combat loneliness, a growing public health issue, particularly in Japan where social withdrawal, or Hikikomori syndrome, is prevalent.

Morimoto’s role involves little engagement; his clients hire him to simply sit in silence, accompany them on walks, or even observe as they engage in odd activities like eating shredded paper.

In early 2024, Morimoto expanded his services with a new offering, "People who don’t rent anything," where people can request a companion for specific tasks like shopping or video gaming. Instead of charging fees, clients only pay for his travel and meal costs.

While many find his job peculiar, Morimoto enjoys the work and appreciates the low stress it brings.
