As we approach Migratory bird season peak migration please keep in mind that you should leave your outdoor flood lights and indoor lights near windows off between 10 PM and 6 AM for the Next few weeks.
Let’s all do our part to protect our fellow feathery friends!

**Lights Out Alert**

The migration highway will be directly overhead on Thursday night. This should bring us our first massive migration night over Indiana, Michigan and Ohio this season. While we have had some good migration nights in recent weeks, we have not had a night in the 5-10+ million range for Indiana, Michigan and Ohio yet. We may hit that threshold tonight, but Thursday night should be the biggest night of the week. The first warblers are now starting to arrive. A lot of Baltimore Orioles are returning to the area, and hummingbirds are migrating during the daylight hours. This lights out map is produced by Purdue University with data from BirdCast. Their message is that you can help keep birds safe on their migration by limiting outdoor light pollution. This especially the case over the next few nights.

When we don’t listen to the natural order of things such as replicating nature‘s carbon cycle through no till farming we’re not just eroding the soil structure but we’re actually reducing Plants ability to uptake both water and nutrients by messing with soil chemistry in ways that are very difficult and costly to fix.

We will always recommend adding organic topsoil to projects instead of using large mechanical means to dig up the Earth. Special fungi relationships form with Soil that has been untouched by mechanical tools and is allowed to remain in symbiosis with its fungal organisms that allow plants to pick up the nutrients by breaking nutrients down for plant roots when telling is used not only does it remove these fungal relationships it also erodes nutrients off of the site causing carbon to not be picked up in the soil anymore by plant roots. Once Soil is compacted in industrial farming and tilled it loses its ability to hold nutrients in a natural way thereby requiring after the fact synthetic fertilizer.

The war in Iran has made the cost of waiting to use regenerative farming practices even higher.

If you’re looking for a low maintenance Tropical pizzazz look no further than the giant Philodendron.

This is one of those philodendrons that can get too big for a space very quickly so plan accordingly if you decide to use it . It will not work in sun and typically does best light to intense shade with Rich hummus and moderately free flowing easily draining soil with a lot of leaf or mulch cover over its roots it is also very easy to divide if you want to take a piece of it once it’s grown along trunk you can cut it off and replant it real easy as it is semi-epiphytic in nature which means it’s roots have the tendency to pick up moisture from the air similar to an air plant. It can effectively climb trees such as this native gumbo limbo tree in this picture and give you high level Tropical pizzazz all year long.
Do not confuse the Philo with the elephant ear such as certain types of taro which are in the calocasia genus and have an elephant ear look but do not climb and can easily end up taking over an entire landscape with intense root structure that spreads and takes over.

maintenance : it tends to stand up really well on its own without the use of a tree behind it but in that case it will start to run and so keep in mind when it gets too long and out of a space that you want to keep it you can trim it back and it will grow from the original trunk that it started from

care: as long as it’s given a good amount of mulch two times a year it typically does not need to be fertilized that has been my experience

Philodendron’s typically stay put in an area approximately 6 x 6 and can be managed to produce babies by cutting the Parent back when it gets too big such as in this picture it continues to be trimmed back and therefore producing much smaller leaves if allowed unchecked the leaf can be as big as 3 feet long by 2 feet wide

As professional landscape designers we need to educate our clients to be conscientous homeowners and conscious consumers and stop buying products laden with pesticides…we must learn to balance our impact on the natural world…birds require our assistance-now more desperately than ever!

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/26/climate/bird-declines.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share rsa

Learn to garden for wildlife-plant a natural hedgerow, increase diversity in your yard, lesrn grow your own food, buy and support local CSA farms who use organic methods, let lady bugs do their job eating aphids, we need to learn to stop using pesticides and chemical fertilizers!

These products are killing our birds as the birds eat the insects which pick up the pesticides and don’t get me started on the horrible impact to our pollinators these products have!

Scientists studying data collected over more than three decades found accelerating losses. Their research offers clues about the causes.

This amazing Cooper’s Hawk appeared in our neighborhood in Pinecrest recently and resides in a tiny fragment of what’s left of the now globally imperiled Pine Rockland habitat which has been decimated by urban development in the last hundred years…if you enjoy seeing birds of prey like this adopt native plants that create habitat for them such as Dade county Slash Pine (Pinus elliotti var. densa). you can also become a member of the NPN here:

You can also do your part by not having RodentBaitStations as they can poison and kill birds of prey like this Cooper’s Hawk once they consume the rodent that has eaten the poison.

Wonderful organization that has done great work for birds of prey is Tropical Audubon which you can become a member and support the excellent conservation work that they do!
