👩‍🌾 we’ve been busy as bees lately. Today, we planted up the new planters on the side of the barn with twenty blueberry bushes, patch of asparagus and some beautiful wisteria to grow over the archways.

So far in the back field we have some holly bushes for winter deco harvest, Staymen apples, blackberries, red raspberries and fall gold raspberries.

Now onto green pears, Asian pears, apricot trees, Chicago hardy figs and thimbleberry.

And of course, couldn’t resist more pollinator wildflower seeds since my visitor this afternoon.

It’s a good day to plant as we have some rain coming in!!

🙏I really do owe a shout out to the Barn Landscaping & Supply on Babcock Blvd! They donated us amazing dirt to plant AND brought equipment up to help me move it!! Thank you!!

🍑good news and bad news. The Chambersburg peaches are all sold out this week at all markets, BUT we have a FULL haul coming next week!! 🥳 definitely grab them while you can!

Tuesday at Franklin Park & Duncan Manor
Wednesday at Fox Chapel/Indiana Twp.

These ARE 100% Chambersburg peaches. No, any PA peach grown in our state CANNOT be classified as Chambersburg. Why? Well first, it’s a lie. Secondly, they have a VERY, UNIQUE & specific growing climate which makes them nationally known for their taste.
And, umm, yes, better than GA. Sorry y’all

Franklin County, PA has a special growing climate which is ideal. The Cumberland valleys are enriched with loamy soil that not only creates taste (bc all taste comes from soil) but encourages fruit production by having hot days and cooler nights.

This year, AGAIN, has been challenging for farmers. We are SUPER fortunate to have their peaches as the valleys were not able to shield them from the late PA freeze this year.

I have been told by numerous PA fruit farmers that this has been the the most challenging and lowest yield that they can remember in 50 years!! Most only have a third of an annual yield.

But yet again…they keep going, persevering, and take good with the bad. 💪

🥬 Now more than ever is a great example as to why it’s SO important to support our local farmers.

BUT you need to support them year to year and all year long, NOT just in an awareness/crisis.

The last two weeks have been crazy busy and we ABSOLUTELY appreciate all of the support!!

We have currently almost completely wiped out our farmer friends of their lettuce. Thankfully, we still have some coming in, but it’s literally as it’s available from the fields or from our hydroponic growing friends such as lettuceladiesllc

Farmers plan their year out in December thru January. They order their seeds and plot their lands. Start sowing in February & March.

Lettuce takes about 60 days to mature. Sometimes 75-80 days dependent on variety.

Within that time they are succession seeding to ensure they have crops to make it thru the year. And when July & August hit, lettuce bolts quickly in the heat as it isn’t the best growing conditions as they like a cooler climate or the greens get tough too far into maturity.

Let’s get to the nitty gritty, real talk. Farming is TOUGH. Long hours and very little return. There are very little farms left that younger generations are still running bc frankly, their elders don’t want them breaking their backs like they did.

With what is going on recently, we all want to eat local. Which I LOVE. That’s what I strive for in the market!!!. But, please be patient. They are ALL are trying. They didn’t forecast this type of demand because their pricing is typically higher than that you would get at big box stores.

If you stick thru with them, they WILL grow for you! Thats why continuing thru the ups and downs is important. With your farmers you have to have faith, commitment and patience and they WILLprovide. I assure you, they are working sun up to sun down.

This is NOT a fad, this is a commitment and investment to your local farmers. Now that you know where your food is grown, the STANDARDS of other growers, and the planning process behind it…I hope I can encourage you to continue to support them!

Thanks y’all!!
