All new housing needs radon mitigation systems

IndoorEnvironments.org

Protecting indoor environments starts long before a family ever moves into a home.

Iowa has officially passed new legislation requiring passive radon mitigation systems in newly constructed single-family and two-family homes across the state. The law references IRC Appendix AF radon-resistant construction practices — helping bring radon protection into the building process from the very beginning.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and one of the leading causes of lung cancer among non-smokers. Building with radon-resistant features during construction can help reduce future exposure risks while creating healthier indoor environments for the people who will eventually live there.

This is more than a building code update.
It is a reminder that prevention matters.

Progress happens when builders, policymakers, code officials, researchers, and indoor environmental professionals work together toward healthier buildings and stronger communities.

Should radon-resistant construction become more common nationwide?

🎙 New Episode: Radon Is a Lifetime Exposure

Radon risk is not a snapshot in time — it’s a cumulative, lifetime exposure.

In this episode of The Indoor Environments Project, we sit down with Dr. Alison Wallace, thoracic surgeon and lung cancer researcher, to discuss how long-term radon exposure contributes to lung cancer risk — particularly among never-smokers.

We explore:

• Why lifetime exposure is difficult to quantify
• The limits of current screening models
• The gap between environmental awareness and medical education
• What radon professionals should recommend when clients discover elevated levels after decades in one home

This conversation bridges environmental science, clinical medicine, and public policy — and reinforces something we know in this industry:

Radon is measurable.
Radon is preventable.
And professional standards matter.
