The eaglet is home safe!

Had an incredible opportunity with returning eaglet #11 back to its home nest after a successful surgery to remove a fishhook. As you can see from the video, sibling ( #9) is quite a character!

Long story short, everything went smooth, the family is reunited, and dad Irv has already fed #11.

Hopefully these eaglets all get the opportunity to grace the skies of , thankful to have been a part of the experience.

In case you haven’t already heard…this past Saturday the Northwood team had the opportunity to add “eaglet rescue” to our resume! 🦅

Saturday morning we received a call to assist with the extraction of an eaglet ( #11) that had ingested a fishing hook earlier in the morning at the US Steel nest outside of Pittsburgh.

Arch Autenreith, Owner and Board Certified Master Arborist along with Kinsey Miller, Certified Arborist and employee at Northwood were able to mobilize and successfully rescued the eaglet from the nest without incident.

Many thanks are in order for the people and organizations who were involved in the success of this rescue, and with the following surgery/care of the eaglet! A few mentions:
-Thanks to Don German (former manager of US Steel who helped organize the rescue) for the initial connection and trusting us to help with the rescue
-Thanks to .connally (who had previous experience with eaglets) for tips on how to best handle and transfer the chick!
-Thanks to my wife and family for being understanding and supportive when I had to leave my son’s birthday party early to get this moving!

We are glad to have been in a position to help, and for this unique opportunity to positively impact our community! Thanks for all of the support Northwood Tree Care has received, and are hoping for a smooth recovery for #11!

*Updates on the eaglet’s recovery can be followed via the PixCams U.S. Steel Nest site and official Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia updates.

Thankful to have many great things happening recently!

First off congratulations to for crushing his Certified Arborist exam!

With that, EVERYONE in the field caring for your trees is either a CERTIFIED or MASTER ARBORIST! Really excited about holding (and pushing) a very high standard of tree management in the Pittsburgh region.

Congratulations to for becoming our first employee to reach 5 years of employment! Truly grateful for your positive impact on Northwood culture and quality!

Our team has been interested in and working with deadwood management through the lens of ecological assets, while managing risk. Here Eric is performing a coronet cut in order to reduce the hazard of large falling branches, while mimicking natural fracturing of broken branches to increase habitat utilization to increase ecological value.

Our entire production team attended the Shade Tree Symposium, and had the pleasure of learning from some great arborists, including .kramer.5667 .climber1911

Thanks to everyone who helped make that event come together, too many to name individually but you know who you are. Special thanks to Pete for making the tree stand happen, and for organizing and helping run the tree corner!

Even had a bucket list moment myself riding the ball of to set the rigging after the show to break down the demonstration tree! (Photo credit )

Also, we are fortunate to be busy and have great clients who trust us to do our best to care for their trees to the best of our ability. Like I said, a lot to be thankful for.

🦅 Today we had the opportunity to help install 2x cameras above the bald eagle nest in Glen Hazel above the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh!

Archie and Andrew hiked in as part of the team for the installation, and Archie installed the cameras around 70’ in order to get a bird’s eye view of the nest!

Thanks to Bill with PixCams for connecting to help, glad our tree climbing abilities were able to assist in such a cool project.

We will share once the cameras are live streaming, check out www.pixcams.com to see the other live streaming cameras while you wait!

Many thanks to Tree Pittsburgh for hosting our Master Arborists Archie and Burlton to lead a discussion about Mature Tree Pruning for Storm Resilience!

After an indoor presentation and discussion, we utilized our tracked lift for a live leverage reduction pruning demonstration on a mature silver maple on campus.

So many great people in the TreePgh organization, it is great collaborating towards improving our community canopy.

I was fortunate to have met over a decade ago during the local tree climbing competitions, has developed such a valuable resource in the Heritage Nursery, a big thanks to for developing and supporting this opportunity, and for trusting us with a platform to share some of what we have learned!

Bonus: last picture has the bald eagle checking us out, see if you can spot it!
