If your roof looks like this right now, listen up. Throwing salt up there or using a electric wire to melt the ice is a temporary bandaid. You are losing $$$ year round and now you can see it. This is an Ice dam and it is formed when warm air from under the roof deck melts the snow on the shingle and then it re-freezes as the melt makes its way down the roof slope. It has been too cold this week for this to happen naturally or from the outside environment. You have a major air leakage and ventilation problem in your attic space.

Homeowners are often dismayed to learn which corners were cut in the construction or renovation of their homes, such as incomplete or missing insulation, or a range hood that doesn’t vent to the outside and instead recirculates gas and cooking vapors in the kitchen.

In a 125-year-old Crafton home — recently renovated but exerting more energy and getting uneven circulation throughout the space — Rhett Major, The Energy Doctor, would recommend drilling holes in walls that were cosmetic achievements in a real estate flip a few years ago.

“I'm not here because everything is hunky dory,” he said. “I’ve been in $500,000 homes where people can’t sleep in their master bedrooms all summer.”
