Components for the base of a cherry dining table. The base will take an ebony stain while the top and skirt will maintain a more natural cherry hue.

The first photo highlights just how much goes into a piece like this. 9 carefully milled pieces along with 30 wedges and pins. People are often surprised and the cost of a piece like this. I hope that sharing these sort of photos provides some level of explanation.

The second photo shows the nested mortise and tenon, which is a particularly strong joint and really good for preventing any sort of wracking.

More progress to come soon.

Some photos from a recent trip to Spruce Flat Boggs in Forbes State Forest, PA. I’d hiked from this parking area before but never knew this was right off of it! This bog contains 2/3 of PA’s carnivorous plants. (Sarracenia purpurea) (Drosera rotundifolia). As an added bonus we found a new sport climbing spot “Beam Rocks” which has been recently redeveloped by While we didn’t get to climb on the day I can’t wait to get back there to see the bog in another season and try the routes!

The bog is the result of clear cutting around the turn of the century, so it’s exactly a natural sight. That being said, it is quite awe inspiring. The stalks are the flowers of the pitcher plants. They were all in bloom on this day! Gradually the forest will retake this but definitely not in our lifetime. This is one of the most unique ecosystems I’ve seen in my home state.

This little day trip was a great reminder of just how many hidden gems there are close by. As I’m planning some bigger trips further afield, it’s nice to know there’s always something new at home too.

I’ve been working on a new line of polyhedral forms. Focusing for now on bud vases. Much like wood turning, it’s a great way to show the unique character of a piece of timber. The case on the left is Spalted and figured Myrtle; a perfect candidate for this treatment. I’ll be playing with this idea a lot more so stay tuned.

Some of the darkest Figured Myrtle I’ve ever come across paired with a highly figured Peruvian Walnut base. I really enjoy the interplay of the contemporary and the natural. Blending clean angles with natural textures is an aesthetic I’m finding a lot of joy in. Polished to a satisfying mild lustre with

I’m a pretty function focused person so creating art for its own sake is new to me. Really excited to keep experimenting and growing! This piece is available. Dm if interested. Have a great weekend everybody!

Shop Build Update!! I’m winding down my time at my day job. My last day is June 19th. June 22nd I start life as a full time woodworker. I’ve been full steam ahead getting the shop ready for the many projects that will go forward from that date.

The macro parts of the build out or done and I’m now getting to really focus in and organize. I still have an absolute ton to do, but the office is insulated and ready to be sheathed, bits, hand tools etc are organized.

As the transition gets closer I’m losing some of the nervousness I had initially. Instead I’m experiencing a calm contentment in the realization of a 15 year dream. Those who know me know I have had a lot of ups and downs. Nonetheless I have worked doggedly towards this point and look forward to making the most of it.

This is fully self funded, self built and self taught. I am not very comfortable with pats on the back but I’m giving myself one now. So excited for this next chapter of life. Thank you to everybody that has lent their support over the years.
