What’s that w**d in my lawn? 🌱

Spring is the season when w**ds start making themselves known (and knowing what you’re looking at is the first step toward getting them under control).

Some of the most common lawn w**ds we see include creeping Charlie, dandelion, thistle, clover, wild violet, and later in the season, crabgrass.

Seeing grubs now? Don’t panic! This is part of their normal life cycle.

At this time of year, many grubs are nearing the end of their active feeding stage, are not causing damages, and should begin dying off soon. The bigger thing to think about is prevention for the next generation.

Grub issues often do not show up until fall and are not identifiable until issues are present. The best time to help prevent that damage is before it happens- typically with a preventative application in July or August.

Consider this your early heads-up: future grub damage is much easier to prevent than repair. 🌱

We hope not, but if it does, you could have red thread!

While it may look concerning, red thread is not something to panic about. It’s a lawn disease that affects the blades of grass, but the good news is that it typically does not require an add-on treatment.

With regular fertilization, proper watering habits, and consistent mowing, your lawn can grow out of it naturally. Once the grass grows enough after fertilization, you’ll simply mow the affected blades right off!

Tall fescue is the clumpy, wide-bladed grass. Crabgrass is the low-growing, spreading w**d.

This is why we often explain that what you’re seeing early in the season may not be crabgrass yet. Tall fescue can show up in noticeable clumps and is commonly mistaken for crabgrass before crabgrass has even germinated.

Crabgrass typically becomes more noticeable later when temperatures warm up and it starts spreading outward from the center.

Knowing the difference helps us treat the lawn properly and set the right expectations for control. 🌱

Think you’re seeing crabgrass? It might actually be tall fescue.

Tall fescue is often mistaken for crabgrass because it grows in clumps and has a wider blade than the rest of the lawn. But in many cases, crabgrass has not even germinated yet.

The difference matters: tall fescue is a grassy w**d or undesirable grass that is already established, while crabgrass is a summer annual w**d that shows up later when soil temperatures warm up.
