This security camera was watching leaves instead of the parking lot.

The customer asked us to clear the view. The crew pruned the branches behind the camera, then reduced the big limb over the lot, and left the rest of the tree alone. Now the camera sees the whole lot.

That pale, washed-out green isn't the tree getting ready for fall. It's the tree telling you it's hungry.

4 signs: pale or yellow leaves, leaves smaller than last year, leaves dropping before the neighbors' trees, and slow new growth at the tips.

In our clay, the usual cause is iron the roots can't reach. Guessing at fertilizer wastes money and can make the lockup worse. Feed in October, while the roots are still working.

A truck pulls up after a storm: "Cut the tree back hard, make it safe." In 5 years it's taller, and its shoots snap in wind.

That offer is topping. The saw stops each big limb at a stub, the tree throws up shoots below every cut, and every stub decays. It's a haircut with a chainsaw, and no arborist prescribes it. On a crape myrtle, people call it crape murder.

Topping puts a heading cut on every big limb, a cut in the middle of the limb where no branch can take over. Stephen, one of our ISA Certified Arborists, found heading cuts from an earlier pruning on a big red oak. Decay ran back into the limbs.

Swipe through all 6, then look up at your own tree. Start with the big limbs. If they end in stubs with shoots crowding below each one, somebody topped it.

You can tell how a crew will treat your trees by how they treat their truck.

Plant a tree here in April and it gets about 8 weeks before it meets 100 degrees.

Plant it in October and it gets 7 months. Roots grow through fall and most of our winter, so by August the tree finds its own water.

2 rules decide whether it makes it. Dig 2 to 3 times wider than the root ball, no deeper. Set the root flare at the soil line. Nurseries often bury it in the pot, so scrape the top of the root ball until you find it.

Water deep after planting and keep at it through winter when we go dry.

The wind swung Logan all over the place at the top of this Frisco live oak. It was blowing 25 to 30 mph.

Someone lion's tailed this tree before we got to it. They stripped out the middle and left puff balls of leaves on the ends of long limbs. That weight catches wind like a sail, and some of those limbs hang on weak connections.

Logan shortened the longest limbs so they catch less wind. That takes stress off the weak spots where limbs break, and it helps the tree grow leaves lower down, where it's bare now.

When he finished, the wind hadn't let up. The limbs had stopped whipping.

1 visit won't undo lion's tailing. We'll spend the next few years bringing these 2 oaks back. This was step 1.

Ask your tree crew why a limb is coming off. If they say "so it looks nicer," find a new crew.

This Prosper homeowner asked plenty. Stephen, an ISA Certified Arborist, had her answers on paper before a saw started. Benjamin, also ISA Certified, ran the crew. Same live oak, 8:45 AM and 2:21 PM.
