2 brace rods. 1 split cedar elm. Both halves still standing.

The crack in the union had been there a while. The homeowner was smart and ran ratchet straps around it. Straps buy time. They don't fix anything.

Here's what does. Scott took weight off the 2 big leads so the wind quits working the crack. Then the crew drilled straight through the union and set 2 threaded rods, washers and nuts flush to the bark. The rods pull the halves together, and the tree lays new wood over the crack from here on.

One ant colony lost its house.

Cedar elms do this a lot in Collin County. If yours has a tight V where two trunks meet, or a seam you can slip a credit card into, have an ISA Certified Arborist put a hand on it before the next storm does.

There's a lollipop-shaped tree on almost every street in Frisco, and somebody paid good money for it.

That's what you get when a crew picks a height, takes everything below the line, and drives off. A row of stubs that rot from the inside out, and a tree holding all its weight out at the branch tips, which is where it can least afford it.

This live oak had limbs sweeping into the lawn. We took them back to the collar, one at a time, and left the interior growth that keeps a limb tapered and fed. It's the same tree it was Friday morning. Same height, same spread. You just can't walk into it anymore.

The tidiest-looking oak on the street is usually the one about to lose a limb.

There's a style of pruning where everything gets stripped out of the interior and all the foliage ends up bunched at the tips. It has a name. Lion-tailing. It photographs beautifully and it shortens the tree's life.

Those inner branches you'd call clutter are doing work. They feed the limb they're on, they keep taper in it, and they shade the bark. Take them all and you get long whippy limbs with heavy ends, sunburned bark, and a tree that starts shedding branches in the first hard wind.

On this corner oak in Plano our ISA Certified Arborist took out deadwood and a few crossing limbs, lifted the canopy off the roof, and left the interior growth alone. Look at the after photo. You can read the branch structure now, and the foliage is still spread along the whole limb.

That's scientific tree pruning. Less impressive the day we leave. Still standing in 20 years.

Her window sits under a Bradford pear in McKinney. That’s where she edits every family session, and the canopy had closed it in.

We made reduction cuts around the outer canopy to filter light through instead of blocking it. A couple of removal cuts opened the window directly. The same pass pulled end weight off the outer limbs.

That last part matters on Bradford pears. Tight unions with included bark plus long, heavy outer limbs is how these trees end up splitting. Shortening those limbs lowers the load at the union.

More light for her. Better structure for the tree.

Mulch piled a couple inches too high against the trunk. Heavy ant activity in it. Adventitious roots coming up out of the pile, and likely girdling roots forming underneath.

The cause was the bubbler. It was sitting right up against the trunk.

We are in severe drought and it hit 109 a few days ago. Trees need water. The water just has to land where the tree can take it up. The absorbing roots are out away from the trunk, not at the base. A trunk-side bubbler only keeps the bark and structural roots wet.

Wet bark plus a buried root flare is how you end up replacing trees on a cycle.

I moved the bubbler and pulled the mulch back off the flare. No charge, Chicken N’ Pickle. I will keep an eye on it.

If your tree looks like a different tree after pruning, you got robbed.

That's what a canopy lift does. Clearance underneath, crown left alone. The low limbs came off this North Dallas live oak so it clears the street and the roofline, and the structure it spent decades building is still exactly where it was.

The cheap version of this job keeps going. Take the low limbs, then work up the interior until you've got a green ball on a stick. Looks tidy from the curb. Costs the tree years.

Pecans don't drop limbs because of the wind.

They drop them because of where the limb grew. The lowest limbs have nothing above them competing for light, so they run sideways instead of up. Then every fall they load up with nuts. Long limb, heavy end, one attachment point at the trunk doing all the work. The wind shows up at the end and gets the blame.

This one in Richardson got a canopy lift. We took whole limbs back to the collar, no stubs, nothing stripped out of the interior to make the tips look full. Same height, same crown, a lot less weight hanging out over the yard.

Go stand under your pecan and look straight up at the lowest big limb. If it runs out flat and long, that's the one.

That's prescription-based pruning. Our ISA Certified Arborists take out what needs to come out and leave the rest alone.

The crew got Christmas early this year.

New backpack blower. More power, wider spread, and the cleanup that used to drag out the end of a job now takes a fraction of the time. More of your money goes into the work on your trees instead of the tidying up afterward.

Not going to lie, they're having way too much fun with it.
