Mosaic installs are always a challenge, especially when gravity comes into play on a vertical install! Throw a large window into the mix and now you have an even bigger obstacle to make sure it all meets up correctly on the return. 📐

Every orange piece of tape is the tiles we had to grind to get this 8' x 6' mosaic wall to work. The hard part is that while its flat on the floor thanks to gravity, this same gravity will come into play once we start installing this on our mosaic wall. Another reason why proper planning will ensure it looks just as good once installed!

Whats another reason our installs last?

Spending the time needed for proper prep is essential!! Ensuring this bathroom floor was flat (close enough to level) while first being nearly a half inch out from one side of the room to the other was 🔑 before we installed these 36x36 LFT tiles. The Ditra will also allow for movement without causing issues down the road.

This bathroom believe it or not had blue carpet in it, under the carpet was a beige travertine tile. Since the shower was already installed along with the shower glass, we had to be extra careful during demo of the old tile. All in all, this job turned out great with a pure white matte 32x32 Large Format Tile for a Designer we work with often in Palm Beach County as well as this being for a repeat client!

Another method that we use and really like due to ease of installation is the single bonding fl**ge shower pan. This method elimates a PVC pan liner which can become problematic when trying to navigate corners and edges due to multiple layers overlapping.

Instead of a 2x4 PT curb, we pour a concrete based curb, install wire lathe to the mud bed floor and then work the mud bed to a pitch perfect slope and let it cure. With the FloFX drain it also allows water to weep to the drain shall there be any issues. What we have found with this system, accompanied by a schluter kerdi membrane, is that it really stands up to how its marketed when installed correctly!

While we mainly post final pictures of our installs, I think its time to start addressing some techniques for constructing a proper shower. Over the years we have seen many people use the "water in water out" PVC pan liner system. While we agree that this method has stood the test of time, it also requires proper installation methods.

The first step is proper rough in with a 3 piece drain, which requires a pre-slope before the pan liner is installed. The beveled edge of a 3 piece drain sets the guage for your mud bed pre-slope. Typically, PT 2x4s are used for the curb while the PVC liner laps over this 2x4 curb ONLY using nails (roofing nails) on the outside to fasten the liner. The curb is then covered with a wire lathe NOT SCREWED CEMENT BOARD!!! and then troweled with mortar, and then a final smooth coat (allow scratch coat to cure).
