Today is the first day of spring!!!

In true north country fashion, the snow is gone, the sun is out, and the wind is whipping. Even if this is a temporary lull of warmer weather, I am enjoying it.

It makes me want to get my fingers dirty and my gardens flourishing.

In order to get that overflowing garden, it takes some preparation. We have been busy cleaning the greenhouse and preparing to do our next round of seed trays. In order for us to have beautiful flowers for you in July, August, and September, we start seeds indoors as early as February for some varieties. What are we growing?

February -

🌱 Ageratum Blue Planet
🌱 Asters
🌱 Ammi
🌱 Bumplerum
🌱 Craspedias
🌱 Dahlias
🌱 Gomphrenia
🌱 Mahogany Splendor
🌱 Yarrow

🌱 Scabiosa
🌱 Snapdragon
🌱 Strawflower
🌱 Lupine

Then in April, we'll start:
🌱 Ornamental Basil
🌱 Celosia
🌱 Cosmos
🌱 Sunflowers
🌱 Zinnia

And in May, we start planting!

Additional crops not started here include:
🌱 Eucalyptus
🌱 a few specialty Lisianthus colors
🌱 Limonium!! (perennial addition for 2025)
🌱 Veronica!! (perennial addition for 2025)

It's such an exciting time of year!!!

Finally time to start the Lisianthus!! Its amazing how such a small seed can become such a beautiful flower. This is our second year starting these guys, they take 12 weeks to go from seed to a plantable seedling. This year we are growing Voyage Pink, Voyage First Love, Voyage White, Voyage Champagne, Rosanne Brown, and Rosanne Terracotta. We will also have a sample of a few new Lisianthus varieties coming from Farmer Bailey, including Croma Yellow, Chateau, and Celeb Madonna.

Winter time is for cuttings folks! My porch is FULL of dahlia cuttings, i cannot wait to see these babies in full bloom...

Winter time is for cuttings folks! My porch is FULL of dahlia cuttings, i cannot wait to see these babies in full bloom this summer! Now keeping these guys alive all winter is not without its trials and tribulations, but i think we’re coming along just fine! A little struggle with some powdery mildew, which we are treating. And i just beat the largest aphid infestation i have ever had inside. I am never bringing in outside plants inside without treatment first EVER again, lol! Hoping everyone one else is doing well with the cold, and are dreaming up their garden plans for 2025!

Dahlia cuttings are thriving and looking very happy! We took the initiative to propagate the varieties that didn't yield great tubers this year, and I'm absolutely delighted with the outcome! We've faced a minor challenge with powdery mildew, but fortunately, it's steadily improving. These cuttings will remain indoors until February, when they'll be relocated to the greenhouse to make space for our annuals.

Wrapping things up this week! We finished pulling seed off the dahlias, celosia, pincushion flowers, mignonette today. Tomorrow we will work on taking fall cuttings of varieties we have that are not good tuber producers. Then the carnage begins. Foliage is cut down, tubers are dug up, and everything is tucked to bed for the winter. Here’s some photos of some of the last minute beauties we saw today.
