Not all remodeling changes carry the same price tag. Some late decisions can require undoing completed work, rescheduling multiple subcontractors, and reordering materials—all of which add significant cost and time to your project.

And the tricky part? Even finish changes that seem minor—like switching to a floating vanity—can trigger a chain reaction across tile, electrical, and mechanical work.

Understanding which changes hit hardest when made after construction begins helps you prioritize early decision-making.

You start pricing out a home renovation, and there's one number everyone wants first: what will the architect cost?

It's a fair question. But here's the one that actually decides whether hiring an architect pays off: what does it cost you if the project goes wrong? A beam without the support it needs. A layout that never quite fits how your family lives. A fix for today's problem that makes next year's project more expensive.

That's why every project starts with a conversation, not a quote — because the real value of an architect isn't a number on a page. It's the surprises you never have to deal with.

Curious how architects actually price a renovation, and what drives your number up or down? We broke it all down on the blog. Read the full breakdown on the blog here: https://www.studiozarch.com/news/how-much-does-a-home-architect-cost

What does an architect actually do once construction starts?

Turns out, a lot more than most homeowners expect. From measuring every corner of your home to catching structural mistakes before they're buried behind a wall, an architect's work happens long before — and long after — the drawings are done.

Curious what that looks like in practice? We're pulling back the curtain on our blog.

This is the part most homeowners don't see — and the part that matters most.

Before a single wall opens, every decision is documented. Every finish, every fixture, all the details the trades will need to build your project. That's not paperwork — that's protection. It's what keeps a straightforward remodel from turning into an expensive, months-long ordeal.

Changing your mind during a remodel is normal—but timing is everything.

One of the most common and costly mistakes homeowners make is waiting until construction is underway to rethink major decisions. By that point, what feels like a small adjustment can quickly become a domino effect, forcing a project to move backward before it can move forward.

Learn why late decisions cost thousands more and how to avoid this common remodeling mistake. Read the full article: http://www.studiozarch.com/top-home-remodeling-mistake-to-avoid-late-changes-that-derail-your-budget

"A lot of people think that once the drawings are done, we're done. But we stay involved during construction, and we feel that's really important to the client getting the home we designed and planned for them."
— Dawn Zuber, Founder and Principal Architect, Studio Z Architecture

Construction drawings are a set of instructions — but once building starts, that's where those instructions meet reality, and reality doesn't always cooperate.

Avoiding costly late changes starts with slowing down at the beginning.

The remodeling process asks you to make decisions about spaces you haven't yet experienced in a new way—which is why a structured, thorough approach matters so much.

When you invest time upfront to clarify priorities, understand trade-offs, and visualize the design in real terms, you're far less likely to need expensive changes once construction begins.

A two-week remodel turned into six months. No architect. No documentation. No advocate.

Without a detailed set of drawings, contractors and subcontractors make assumptions. And assumptions lead to mismatched bathroom fixtures, inconsistent paint finishes, and cabinet orders that have to be redone from scratch.

Every one of those mistakes adds time and cost — often far more than the architectural fee the homeowner was trying to avoid.

An architect builds the project on paper first. Every decision documented before construction starts. Every trade on the same page. Every selection locked in — so the job runs smoothly instead of sideways.

There's a difference between drawings that are correct — and a home that's actually built to match them.

On more than one project, our team has arrived at a construction site to find a steel beam supported properly on one end by a steel column, and on the other with wood studs which aren't sufficient to carry that load. Another time, we caught a missing piece of critical structural reinforcement days before the siding went up.

Catching those moments isn't luck. It's why architects stay involved through construction, not just design.
