If you’re planning a home addition, you’ve probably wondered:

Should I hire an architect, or a design-build firm?

The biggest difference isn’t the design itself.

It’s how the project is managed.

With the traditional approach, you hire an architect to create plans, then bring those plans to contractors for pricing and construction.

With design-build, the designer and builder are part of the same team from the beginning.

That means the people designing the project are working directly with the people responsible for building it.

Why does that matter?

Because every decision affects the next one.

The design affects the budget.
The budget affects the materials.
The materials affect the schedule.
The schedule affects the construction process.

When those conversations happen under one roof, the process tends to be more coordinated and predictable.

For homeowners, that often means:
• One point of contact
• A more collaborative process
• Fewer handoffs between companies
• Greater accountability from start to finish

Can you build an incredible addition with an architect and contractor working separately? Absolutely.

But if you’re looking for a more integrated approach, that’s why design-build has become such a popular choice for home additions in Connecticut.

The best projects don’t happen because of a great floor plan alone.

They happen because the entire team is aligned from the start.

This is how they maintain the blades at Connecticut’s largest sawmill.

A process called swaging helps restore the tooth profile and keep every cut accurate.

Where does exceptional lumber come from?

We recently got an inside look at Hull Forest Products, Connecticut’s largest sawmill, to see how raw logs are transformed into the hardwood products used in homes across New England.

From massive timber stacks to the milling process itself, this tour gave us a new appreciation for the craftsmanship and logistics behind every board that makes its way into a project.

This is just a preview. The full YouTube tour is coming soon.

You own the land, but that doesn’t mean you can build wherever you want.

Setbacks, zoning rules, lot coverage, wetlands, septic locations, easements, and property lines can all limit where an addition can actually go.

That big backyard might look like plenty of space, but the buildable area could be much smaller than you think.

Before you fall in love with a floor plan, make sure the addition is actually possible on your property.

Should homeowners be able to build whatever they want on their own land?

Today we had the opportunity to tour Hull Forest Products in Pomfret Center, CT and get a firsthand look at their operation. Seeing the journey from sustainably managed forests to finished wood products gave us an even greater appreciation for the craftsmanship and stewardship that goes into every board.

A special thank you to Ben Hull for taking the time to guide us through the process, answer our questions, and share the story behind Hull Forest Products. We truly appreciated the insight and hospitality.

This second-story addition evolved into a complete rebuild.

After tearing down and reconstructing the existing living room, we can confidently say this home has been completely transformed.

🔥 Problem solving in progress.

During the fireplace installation, we found that the vent location wasn’t going to work as intended. To make sure the system performs properly, we’re installing a fan that will redirect the heated air through ductwork beneath the floor.

You’ll also catch a glimpse of the construction drawings from AK&CO Design, whose thoughtful interior design is helping bring this home to life.

The best projects come together when designers and builders collaborate to find solutions and execute the details correctly.

Mistakes happen. They’re part of every project. When an unexpected issue comes up on the jobsite that’s outside of our control, the focus shifts to finding the best path forward.

Fortunately, this one has a simple solution. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for the fix to arrive.
