If you're about to hire an architect, here are 3 things most people overlook until it's too late.

1) Make sure they've actually built in your area. Local knowledge matters — zoning, flood requirements, what the municipality will and won't approve. You don't want to learn that on the fly.
2) Look at their process, not just their portfolio. A beautiful portfolio means nothing if they go dark for weeks at a time or hand you off to a junior staffer after the contract is signed.
3) Ask who's actually running your project. Is it the principal? A project manager? Knowing who's in your corner from start to finish changes everything.

The right architect is your advocate through the whole build.

We're proud to shine a spotlight on one of the incredible people behind the work we do every day — meet Tara!

Tara is a graduate of NJIT, where she earned her Master's Degree in Architecture, and she brings over 25 years of hands-on experience in both the construction and architecture fields. Her depth of knowledge is matched by her commitment to the craft — she's deeply well-versed in building codes and currently serves on the Mechanical/Energy Subcode Committee for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.

But what really sets Tara apart goes beyond her credentials. She generously volunteers her time doing meaningful work for individuals with special needs, and when she's not on the job, you'll likely find her cheering on her daughter at a competitive dance event.

We are so fortunate to have Tara's expertise, passion, and dedication as part of the PDR team. She makes every project — and every day — better.

Jose came to PDR with four years of experience and a Bachelor's in Architecture from Thomas Jefferson University. He's always asking the right questions, pushing to understand the why behind every decision, and you can see it in the way he approaches his work. In a smaller kitchen, thoughtful design can make the space feel much larger.

Working with Niki Kovacs, the cabinetry was designed completely custom so each cabinet could be sized precisely for the layout. Frameless interior face allows the doors to open fully, maximizing usable storage inside

White cabinetry was selected to keep the kitchen bright and open, while floating shelves provide additional storage without adding visual weight.

Focusing on the peninsula portion of the kitchen with Designer, Niki Kovacs.

Keeping that surface uninterrupted meant relocating the sink to the exterior wall. 's decision not only preserved valuable counter space but also created a work area with views toward the water and plenty of natural light.

Appliances were also carefully considered. The microwave was built into a drawer beneath the counter, eliminating visual clutter and maintaining clean sightlines from the adjacent living space.

When every element is thoughtfully placed, the entire kitchen functions more seamlessly.

Designing a kitchen starts with understanding the people who will use it. Kitchen designer begins every project by learning about the household.

How many people live there? How do they entertain? How does the kitchen connect to the living and dining areas? In this case, the space didn’t allow for a full island, so a peninsula became the best solution. It provides seating, keeps the kitchen open to the living area, and supports the overall flow of the room.

Appliance placement is equally important. The refrigerator often sets the tone for the layout since it requires significant space and is accessed frequently, even by people not actively cooking. Smart space planning ensures that the kitchen works as beautifully as it looks.

For this oceanfront project, the goal was to move quickly enough to bring the structure from the ground up to a fully weather-tight condition before the seasonal shutdown. That meant completing driven pilings, concrete grade beams, block foundation walls, structural steel installation, utilities, roofing, and windows all within a tight two-month window.

In flood-zone construction, planning and coordination become just as important as the building itself. With limited space on site and a strict timeline, every step had to be scheduled carefully to keep the project moving.

Choosing hardwood flooring isn’t always as simple as solid vs engineered. Working with specialists like helps ensure the right flooring choice is paired with proper installation and environmental control.

Many prefinished manufacturers produce solid boards up to a certain width, then transition to engineered construction once the boards get wider, often around five inches. The reason is stability. Engineered flooring is built in layers, which helps reduce movement across wider planks. Humidity also plays a major role.

In homes with forced hot air heat, winter humidity levels can drop dramatically, sometimes as low as 15 percent. Without proper humidity control, both solid and engineered floors can experience movement. That’s why maintaining indoor humidity between roughly 35 and 55 percent is critical. It protects not just the floors, but trim, cabinetry, and even overall comfort inside the home.

How do you match custom stairs to a factory-finished hardwood floor? Adam from shows us.

When the floor isn’t being sanded and finished on site, the challenge becomes recreating the factory color and tone on the stair components. That includes the bullnose, stair treads, and railings. The team at Floors By The Shore develops custom stain and finish combinations to match the flooring as closely as possible.

Since many factory finishes involve specialized techniques, achieving the right blend takes both experience and experimentation. When done correctly, the transition between flooring and stairs looks like it was all produced as one system.
