Why do gardeners love arborist wood chips? A good place to start would be to define what true arborist chips are: they are a natural blend of tree branches, twigs, leaves, and needles - basically everything except tree roots.

Gardeners love them for many reasons, including the ability to obtain large amounts for free or at a minimal cost from local tree services.

As the chips break down, they feed beneficial fungi and improve soil structure. The chips also work like a sponge to retain moisture during the heat of the summer.

A thick 4-6 inch layer of chips suppresses w**ds, and will not draw nitrogen from your soil if left on top and not tilled in. It’s always best to choose coarse arborist wood chips over fine chips. Coarse chips promote better water and gas exchange and help prevent w**d seeds from germinating (w**d seeds can lie on top of fine chip mulch and germinate).

Arborist wood chips do not significantly alter soil pH or leach harmful chemicals; they are also rich in good fungi such as mycorrhizae.

Instead of using barriers like cardboard or landscape fabric (which smother the soil and everything else in it), consider arborist wood chips for perennial and vegetable gardens.
