Why Is It Exterior Paint Important?

If you are a Florida transplant or one of our winter residents, you have been trained to think in terms of “seasons” for exterior household maintenance. Since we don’t get snow – the last time was in 1953– and below-freezing weather is rarely an issue, the winter is typically thought to be the best time to paint the exterior of your home. If you’re doing it yourself, you’re probably right.
However, many of our winter residents have their homes painted while they are up north during the summer, and we don’t ever meet them until they return in the winter, long after the job is complete.The main problems that we face in the summer time in Florida for exterior work is heat, humidity, rain and hurricanes. While we obviously can’t paint the exterior of a home during a rain storm or hurricane, we can however, paint a house at any time of year. We love the Florida winter, but we don’t mind the heat, and we’re used to working around the unpredictable weather patterns of the Florida summer as well. In Florida, more than any other location in the U.S., making sure that the paint on your house is of superior quality, and applied properly, is more important than when to apply it. Any good painting contractor knows this.

Most Florida homes have exterior walls made of stucco. If the paint is applied unevenly, pin-sized areas of your outside walls are exposed to the outside elements – like rain, dust, mold and algae.

If we have nothing else in Florida, we have humidity, and humidity breeds mold; mold spores can set up housekeeping in the tiniest crevice imaginable. Sadly, when they do, they don’t remain outside. They creep into the porous openings in your masonry and migrate into your interior walls. Molds are one of the most common causes of respiratory illnesses in Florida.

One of the best ways to protect your home from infection from molds is to ensure that the exterior walls of your home are sealed with a quality paint. We use only Benjamin Moore paint because we have found that it holds up better, and the color lasts longer under the Florida sun than any other brand on the market. We also use rollers, not sprayers, because it is proven to be the best way to apply paint to stucco walls. Sprayers just cannot work the paint into the tiny holes and cracks in order to give you a solid application that will protect your home.

So “weather” you do it yourself, or hire a contractor, protect your home with quality paint and spend the extra time or money to make sure it’s done properly. Your investment will thank you for it.

The Holidays are here and the New Year is just aroung the corner, so it is great time to paint the Interior or Exterior of Your Home!

Paint trends come and go just like other home interior trends but they are one of the most inexpensive ways to completely transform your house room by room. However, if you pick the wrong paint colors or overall color scheme, your home can quickly be transformed into something that is less than appealing. Neutrals are really popular in paint colors right now because they allow you to elaborate with more vibrant colors in your home décor and accessories, all while accentuating the architectural curvature of your home.

White

It used to be the trendy thing to cover every white space of your house with a color but times have quickly changed and now white all white everything is desired more than ever. White is the perfect way to make any room in your house look fresh, clean, and sharp. Paint everything from your walls to moldings in a crisp white to give it a more modern appeal.

If your kitchen cabinets are out of date, paint them with a fresh coat of white paint and replace hardware with oil rubbed bronze fixtures for a more modern and up-to-date look. All white rooms give you the opportunity to either add a lot of color for a more eclectic feel or focus more on neutral tones.

Grey

Grey tones, whether light heather grey or dark slate grey, are popular in many home interior magazines and catalogs. Grey paint can bring an element of sophistication to a room without being over the top. However, there are so many tones and variations of grey available that it can be hard to pick the right choice.

When picking a color follow these guidelines:

Avoid blue and green toned greys and focus on greys that have more charcoal tone qualities
Look in magazines to see what greys catch your eye
Don’t be afraid to bring home a handful of grey paint swatches
Tape paint swatches to your wall and step back to get a good look of the color in different lights. Greys tend to pick up different colors in different lighting
Tan

Tan has been a popular neutral option for years and luckily, it isn’t going out of style any time soon. Tan paint has warmer tonal qualities than gray paint, but it still gives you the freedom to elaborate with décor in order to add color. For a polished and finished look, add neutral accessories to help enhance the tan walls. Much like picking any other paint color for your home, picking a tan paint color can equally as trying.

When picking a tan paint color follow these guidelines:

Avoid tans that have a pinkish tint to them. This will make your walls look outdated and unpolished
Look for tans that have a more grey cast but that are still warm in tonal orientation
Tape paint swatches to your wall and step back to get a good idea of the color and how it looks with your furniture and décor.
