Love lilacs but don’t love that they aren’t native? That’s ok! Keep the lilacs! Just plant something native nearby to support the biodiversity.
Here, I have reblooming lilacs (that smell AH-mazing btw) planted with the native yellow Zizia aurea.

Azaleas in full bloom around town! Look at this wall of color from these two large shrubs. Wowza!

Can you have a garden that mixes native and non native plants? Yes you can! It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. (Just don’t plant anything invasive!)
Here the non-native purple catmint (Nepeta) looks gorgeous in front of the pale blue flowers of the native Threadleaf Bluestar (Amsonia).
Love it!

These incredible lilacs are smelling so sweet in my vase but also outside in my garden! I just love their smell and am particularly fond of the dark purple variety.

I originally created this for a possible spot in the local Art Guild’s exhibition “Floral Fantasies”. Unfortunately, it wasn’t chosen but I am still very proud of my piece and all the thought and work that went into creating it.

My idea of a floral fantasy would be to look into a mirror and see myself surrounded by flowers. The mirror’s frame is made out of cardboard. I cut it to a unique shape and I used hot glue to create the detail before painting it all gold. The flowers are all real and have been pressed by me, then thoughtfully arranged on the blue paper, which is the inside of the mirror. The women silhouettes represent the self we imagine vs. the self we inhabit.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments. Thanks!
