Not every plant we find in the woods is naturally occurring or even native. A hike through parks (city, county, state or national) might reveal some surprises, like these daffodils. Daffodils (scientific name Narcissus) are not native to the US; they are native to southern Europe in areas like Spain and Portugal. Their plantings in “wild” places are from old homesteads, beautification efforts by clubs, and relocation of dirt to fill areas such as highway edges. Unlike other bulbs like tulips, daffodils aren’t bothered much by wildlife and so have multiplied over time, sometimes creating a ‘natural’ look.

Sometimes found in large clumps, monarch butterflies overwintering along California’s central coast prefer to hang out in eucalyptus trees, Monterey cypress and Monterey pines.
