New stair build and hand rail out of Brazilian Walnut(IPE). Client asked me to build new stairs that matched her existing IPE porch. I milled some of this lumber myself, particularly the center boards on each tread, rails and ballusters. Out of the scraps I drilled plugs and filled the screw holes in before sanding and staining.

Given that it’s the hardest wood in the world that’s commercially available, it stands up to just about anything thrown at it. Including saw blades. Very difficult to work with but rewarding to build with it. // 2024 //

I designed and built this three tone composite deck last month featuring a border and inlay to help break up the 500sq ft into distinct areas.

Cedar lattice and planter build this spring. The client is a potter so the lattice work will be a place to hang and showcase work. The fence was built last year for their backyard wedding. I’ll be back next year to do a hand built side door on the garage.

Driveway gate and cedar fence build from this past winter. This was an 80’90’ fence to replace the chain link fence that became entwined with the bamboo. The fun thing about setting posts in bamboo is there are no holes to dig, they all have to be sawed out. The neighbor wanted to keep the bamboo so this was a tricky one to maintain driveway space without interfering with the bamboo but it turned out.

Clear cedar fence build in Alameda. We’ve had more requests for lighter stained projects lately and one thing to keep in mind with lighter stain is the upkeep is higher. Basically, the darker the stain, the more it protects against UV radiation and the less frequent you need to stain the wood. Think of a living room rug that’s been receiving the same sun year after year and when the rug is removed the wood is a different color. Same concept. I think lighter stains look great and we’ve been really into this “ipe” stain lately, the stain color and its ability to block UV radiation is one thing to keep in mind when upkeeping wood.
