Located in Monmouth, Oregon, the inspiration for this custom residential home came from the prohibition era as Monmouth was the last dry city along the west coast. The concerted efforts by city officials to enforce social order was a form of control, a set of rules imposed on the population. With order inevitably comes rebellion and disorderly conduct. However, order can also bring harmony through repetition, cleanliness in standardization, and uniformity.

The house design is segmented by vertical load bearing walls, parapets that rise above the roof forms creating a sense of order between programmatic living sections. Within that order is rebellion and chaos as each segment varies in height and width. Order and chaos each fighting for dominance creates harmony in the building form and function.

What once was a customs house built after 1869 is now a popular cafe and bar located directly on the waterway. The Neo-gothic brick structure is now a heritage monument located in the heart of Hamburg, Germany’s famous warehouse district.

If viewed from the street, one would never know the structure touches the canal via staircases weaving through massive stone columns. The frozen waterway makes it all the more magical.

Our second derm clinic with Defining Dermatology is now open! Check out D(x)D in Stanwood, Washington for all your medical and cosmetic needs.

This location may not have been as intensive as the Portland buildout, but it was still important to maintain the brand aesthetic and signature green of the original D(x)D. Clean, bright and sterile (but not dull) were the driving factors for the interior design at this space. Vinyl wayfinding graphics with meaningful clinic names carried over into this space, along with the floating glass shelves for product and foliage display, all drawing the eye to the floating aluminum D(x)D logo.

It was a long journey to complete the building alteration one wall and roof at a time. Now we just need a tenant that will help bring community together and add to the development potential of the St Helens waterfront expansion project.

A sketch from my visit to the Elbphilarmonie concert hall in Hamburg, Germany. It was too cold to sketch outside so it was based on a photo I took. I didn’t get to see the concert hall itself, but of course I rode the 269 ft long escalator to the viewing platform. Swipe to see the process drawings. A look back at our ADU design from concept to creation back in 2019. The project was all about maximizing program in a limited amount of space. The entry, living, dining, kitchen and bathroom are located on the main level, and the second level loft provides the sleeping area. Light, bright, and connected to the outdoors, the space feels larger than you’d expect.
