For a number of years, we’ve had the opportunity to stay at our Manzanita on First project over this holiday weekend. We’re heading out there again to enjoy this beautiful place, which is has been loved by many since 2017. We still feel great about all the decisions here, most of which were made over 10 years ago. It still feels of-the-place, approachable, and comfortable. More art has been added, including a beautiful Judy Cooke in the stairwell. Interiors should evolve and grow, but when the baseline stands the test of time and trend cycles, it’s a great feeling.

These photos of the central stair are a favorite, masterfully crafted by

A treetop living room at Sockeye -> swipe to see the before. The bulky central stair, which led to a very secondary room, moved to a more discrete location, making way for a new fireplace location that could be celebrated and used often. The details and material intersections were tidied up, fresh window detailing, improved lighting, and room proportions make all the difference 📐

The hearth is located in the heart of Sockeye’s re-worked floor plan. The wood burning fireplace can be enjoyed from both the kitchen and living room, while providing a defining edge to both spaces.

Positively glowing 🧡 An unconventional camera angle so you see what our client experiences when she’s cooking. The counter-to-ceiling window detail, a result of detailed drawings and numerous site meetings, further blurs the barrier to the outdoors.

Cabinetry serves not only as practical storage but also as a space-defining tool. We softened the edges, topped them with beautiful textured granite, and created high and low contrast through varied stain formulas.

is designed for retreat, gathering, and connection to the ever-changing Lewis River. Site visits were punctuated by (flocks!) of bald eagles, high-jumping salmon, and of course the ebb and flow of natural waterfalls flowing into the Lewis.

We are entering the era of calls to remodel late 90s and early aughts homes. So many of these are incredibly difficult to improve- often lacking connection to site, poor and voluminous floor plans, the list goes on. We frequently decline. This one was different. The site was just begging for engagement and our client had the imagination and passion around making this a beautiful place.

We’ll start our tour in the kitchen, designed for hosting and large gatherings. Anchored by expansive glazing, allowing gorgeous glowing tree-top and river views, both of which were completely absent from the original kitchen design and location. A deep (river-view blocking deck) was stretegically removed and the kitchen was turned 180 degrees- where it always should have been. Be sure to swipe to see the before 📐
