Onion Bunches are in!
Green onions + whole onions are a staple ingredient for many meals. Onion bunches are a convenient low cost way to grow tons of each!
After planting in sets of 3-10, onion starts will become established and begin to grow new leaves. As needed, the smallest onion starts can be pulled out of each bunch/set to eat as green onions.
Leave the largest, healthiest starts in each bunch to continue to grow into full size onions.
This process of removal to eat as green onions will gradually reduce the number of onions growing next to each other over the spring/summer.
Once only 2-3 starts are left, you can stop removing any as green onions. 2-3 onions can definitely grow in a bunch, since as they mature the swelling onions will simply push apart from each other. They will still grow into healthy medium size onions, even in sets of 3.
However, you can reduce each bunch down to just a single onion, especially if max size per onion is your goal.
Sets of onion starts can definitely be planted in large multi row blocks, if you prefer the conventional organized garden with crops fully separated.
But since onions are relatively low growing with a fine, shallow root systems, they’re ideal for interplanting between other different crops!
Try adding a single or double row of onions alternating between other crops! Or just throw a single set of onion starts here or there throughout the garden!
