Woofter Bolch Architecture

Woofter Bolch Architecture We are driven to create architecture that is environmentally sound, grounded in place, and responsive to its time and culture.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Woofter Bolch Architecture is a collaborative design practice equally committed to providing excellent design and outstanding client service. We emphasize optimism, simplicity, clarity, and craft in our work with a process that is focused on the best interests of the project. Our practice is set up as an open studio that encourages teamwork and impromptu dialogue in an e

nvironment in which creativity, diligence, and humor are all highly valued. We approach all of our projects with an open mind and are inspired by and learn from the diverse knowledge and expertise of those we work with, from clients to craftspeople, from consultants to contractors. Our studio methodology centers on an iterative, interactive design process that includes learning from all project team members, testing options, and together discovering appropriate and innovative solutions. It is a shared exploration with the client—a collective journey that involves both analysis and synthesis, both finding and making. Through thoughtful design we seek to enrich the human spirit, improve well-being and strengthen community. Our process emphasizes iteration and the importance of craft. We explore and test concepts using a variety of tools, from analog to digital, from physical to virtual. We see design as an accumulation of knowledge that gets richer with more input and exploration.

In-process study for a backyard T-shaped addition (and potential future alley-facing ADU) on an amazing site in SE PDX. The project, for a creative couple with young children, seeks to engage interior and exterior and create three distinct outdoor spaces of varying scale and character.

Another view of our new ADU project, this one looking toward the alley. A row of clerestory windows in the kitchen aligns with the top of the backyard fence, continuing the geometry of the exterior into the interior. This maintains privacy while bringing in daylight and providing views to the neighboring rooftops across the alley.

In for permit!

We have been working with wonderful repeat clients on a new ADU that will both enhance their backyard and engage the alley behind. The simple, cabin-like form will feature exposed wood throughout and a collection of carefully arranged niches, windows, and skylights that will create layers of space and visually expand the cosy interior.

Model of the reception desk, stair, and skylight at the heart of the new Alliant Systems Portland HQ. We used this model to explore and explain the spatial and material relationships of the existing and new elements at this key moment at the center of the design.

The project renovates a beautiful industrial building in SW Portland characterized by a concrete structure at the first floor and timber at the second. A new steel stair rises links the two floors and brings daylight to the heart of the office via a new flared skylight above. The actual construction is finishing up beautifully and will be open soon.systems

Starting construction soon!

We have been working closely with Alliant Systems to design a new Portland headquarters for their growing team. Located in a 2-story former warehouse building in SW Portland, the project reflects Alliant’s commitment to downtown Portland and will create a new office environment that reflects their company’s unique culture and supports their collaborative ethos.

With a goal of maximizing a sense of connection between the floors, the design creates a new open stair located below an expansive skylight that will link the two levels and provide a central focal point for the variety of new open work areas and enclosed meeting and breakout spaces arrayed throughout.

The project has been especially meaningful as we have enjoyed a long-term collaborative relationship with Alliant, going back close to 20 years.

Study model for our project at PCC pulled apart to show the new program elements created within the previous natatorium space. Our renovation works to maintain and highlight the positive qualities of the building’s original 1970 concrete structure while adding a variety of flexible new teaching and gathering spaces on two floors.
