Whether it's gorgeous spring bulbs, lush summer flowers, fiery autumn leaves, or tough winter blooms, Cornell Farm has been serving the Portland area with home-grown plants, organic supplies, and planet-friendly advice for 39 years. On Mother's Day 1987, founders Deby and husband Ed, opened a retail stand (The Patio) selling geraniums, fuchsia hanging baskets and large buckets of ripe cherry tomat

oes grown in the first greenhouse. The business developed broader each year, adding more and more annual and perennial varieties, then containers and gardening supplies, and eventually houseplants, gifts, arbors, outdoor art, statuary and outdoor furniture. Today, Cornell Farm specializes in growing 1000 varieties of annuals and perennials, gourmet hanging baskets and container gardens. In addition to a proven selection of trees and shrubs, the newest varieties are also featured including the low maintenance landscaping roses and topiaries. Custom potting and consultation services and delivery are available, and a variety of classes are held sporadically during the year.

The countdown to tomato time just might be over! 😍 Tomatoes are the ultimate sun-lovers, so they're looking a few things to start producing their juicy summer delights: nighttime temps no lower than 50º F, soil temps above 60º F, and LOTS of light. We all know spring is unpredictable around here, but the forecast is finally checking all the boxes!

If you bought your tomatoes early, here's your sign to move them outside or plant them in the ground. And if you're still waiting... get 'em while they're hot! 🍅

Mulch, mulch, mulch! Mulching is a powerful technique in the garden, but let's slow down and consider the 'why' before we give into mulch mania 😉

Mulch does more than tidy up your garden beds and suppress weeds: it adds a layer of insulation to your soil. When you use a chunky organic mulch (like fir bark, hazelnut shells, or even fallen leaves), it mimics the natural process where plant debris shields the soil from the elements. It eventually decomposes back into the soil, helping it to absorb and retain moisture. All the while, it helps regulate the soil temperature against the highs and lows of the air above.

The result? Rich, moist soil that can weather the extremes of the summer sun and the winter chills. Mulching is a big boost for trees, shrubs, and many perennials, especially in the first year (when it's especially critical to keep those roots from drying out). It can reduce maintenance and supplemental watering needs while giving your plants the best chance of success 🌳

HOW TO MULCH: Imagine where the full root system is (or will be) and create a 2 - 4' wide doughnut-shaped ring of mulch, piled 3 - 4" high. Be careful not to leave any mulch piled against the stem or trunk of your plant to prevent rot.

Mulch is just another problem-solving tool in your arsenal. Many gardeners achieve the same effects through dense plantings. If you find yourself mulching large areas to cover the bare soil between plants, you might need more plants 🙊

A Pacific Northwest spring is so many things.

It's sun-soaked afternoons 🌞
It's flashes of rain (and sometimes hail!) ☔️
It's cloudy days that just can't chase the color away ☁️

You can love it or leave it, but it's the whole package of this eclectic season that makes our NW gardens, parks, and wildlands so beautiful. And spring color is the ship that carries us through the ups and downs to celebrate this magical time of year.

What's brightening up your spring? 💕
