With a direct view of the water through the entryway, this shingle-style lake home was designed around the daily lives our clients had envisioned from the beginning. The front facade features several side porches that provide opportunities for more intimate moments, while a small “rock garden” created by several of the existing boulders became a natural playground for the grandchildren to enjoy.

We’re excited to be featured in the latest issue of Decor Maine as part of their Color Story series.

For Principal Architect and Interior Designer Cristina Johnson, every material and finish selected for a space serves a purpose beyond aesthetics. In this room, a carefully curated palette of colors, textures, and natural materials works together to create a sense of warmth and comfort.

As Cristina shares in the feature, successful interior design is about more than individual selections, it’s about understanding how each element contributes to the overall experience of a space and works alongside the architecture. From the richness of the materials to the subtle layering of color and texture, every detail was chosen to support the home’s character and the way it will be lived in for years to come.

Thank you to Decor Maine for highlighting the intentional creative decisions behind this design.

Since the initial sketch (drawn by Principal Architect Rob Carty), this lake home was imagined as an Adirondack timber-frame style home, incorporating a use of high end masonry along the skirt of the home to further ground the structure to its rustic setting. Situated on nearly 100 acres of mature evergreens and over 400 feet of Lake Winnipeasaukee shoreline, our Lakeside Estate had always intended to act as a continuation of its surroundings for an outdoors-loving family.

Of working with timber as both a structural and aesthetic design element of a home, Principal Architect Jason Bailey says, “Timber has a natural warmth that connects a home to its environment, especially on lakefront or mountain sites like this one. When the structural elements are exposed— and they’re natural wood — it reinforces that sense of connection to nature.”

Within this newly built lake home, the various bedrooms embody the warmth and comfort of a longtime family retreat while taking advantage of the site’s surrounding beauty, thanks to intentional design and planning by the project team.

Running the length of the waterfront façade, a stone patio creates expansive outdoor gathering space for the home’s multi-generational family. Paired with traditional Tuscan columns, tray ceilings, and decorative soffits, the architecture strikes a balance between refinement and the warmth of a classic lakeside cottage.

This week we are celebrating the incredible milestone of Managing Partner and Principal Architect Rob Carty's 23-year anniversary with TMS Architects & Interiors!

Rob joined TMS in 2003 as a Project Architect and quickly became an integral part of our team, rising to Principal by 2007. Over the past two decades, he has helped shape many of the firm’s prominent residential projects, from considerate renovations to custom new homes, as well as more than a dozen branch banks.

Rob’s talents extend beyond architecture, too. In 2004, he earned his commercial pilot’s license and continues to fly as a member of the Civil Air Patrol- an impressive passion that reflects his dedication, discipline, and adventurous spirit.

Please join us in congratulating Rob on 23 years with TMS Architects & Interiors. We are grateful for his leadership, hard work, and lasting contributions to our firm.

Thinking back on the design choices of our Ocean Contemporary home, head architectural designer Lafe Covill says, “We chose to accentuate the different materials on this home as volumetric parts that weave together to provide openness as well as privacy on a narrow coastal site. Each individual material whether shingles ,stone or glass are banded together to form the contemporary shingle style whole. The symmetry on this facade reinforces its monumental relationship with the bay it views.”
