She’s out and ready to be glazed.

This piece is the result of something I talk about often: mistakes along the process, in this case, a collapse.

When it happens, there’s a brief moment of panic. Then the challenge kicks in. I become more interested in solving the problem than frustrated by it.

What I enjoy most is knowing the piece will become something I never would have planned on my own.

Frankie 🤎 and my sculptures: Interstice and Of one

She’s a Brussels Griffon. I recently learned that the smooth coat Brussels is originally called Petit Brabançon.

Glazed surface after wood firing 🔥

Whistle form made from a mix of recycled clay and backyard clay. Exploring surface possibilities… For this one, I used a low fire green glaze, which shifted to red in certain areas after firing in the fire chamber, where smoke, ash, flame, and heat altered the surface throughout the firing.

Started wearing gloves to work with clay. No idea why I resisted it for so long. After wedging mounds of dark recycled clay that wrecked my hands, I caved… haven’t looked back since. Only took me 20 years.

The José y Teresita piece I made during our trip with THREAD CARAVAN in a workshop with Taller Manos Que Ven 🤲🏽 didn’t quite survive the firing. The candle holder from dear Margarita Cortés broke during travel… so I did what I love most: gluing the pieces back together. 🤗

I don’t know why I’m so drawn to this process, but I tend to cherish the repaired pieces even more.

There are also a few fragments we painstakingly collected from the bottom of the fire pit that don’t belong to my Manos piece. (1st photo) Anyone?
