DIY flooring looks simple enough on YouTube.

But making one these 5 (easy-to-make) flooring mistakes could have you shopping for replacement floors in the next few years:

1. Skipping the moisture test:
Moisture trapped in the subfloor works its way up, causing boards to warp and cup.

2. Not letting wood acclimate
Wood needs time to adjust to your home’s temperature and humidity. Install it too soon and it shrinks or swells after it’s down, leaving gaps or buckling.

3. Ignoring an uneven subfloor
Your floor is only as flat as what’s under it. Skip the prep and you’ll get cracked tile, flexing planks, and squeaks with every step.

4. Using the wrong glue or trowel
Every product calls for a specific adhesive and application method. Get it wrong and the floor can lift, and the manufacturer may not cover it under warranty.

5. Forgetting the expansion gap
Floating floors need room to expand. Install them tight to the wall and they’ll buckle with nowhere to go.

Our After Five Floors installation teams are trained on every one of these details, down to the specific adhesive each material requires.

Which means your floor goes in right, the first time.

Choosing tile isn’t just about the look.

Foot traffic, moisture, sunlight, and how you use the space all affect how a material holds up over time.

Take ceramic and porcelain.

They can look nearly identical, but porcelain absorbs less than 0.5% of its weight in water, while ceramic absorbs more.

On a backsplash, that difference barely matters.

In a shower, on a busy entryway floor, or out on the patio, it matters a lot.

That’s why we don’t recommend materials from a catalog.

We come to you. 🏡

One of our flooring and tile specialists will visit your home, walk through the room with you, and assess what the space really needs.

We’ll look at how much traffic it gets, how much moisture it sees, and how you live in it day to day. Then we’ll recommend the materials that will look great and hold up for years to come.

And when it comes to pricing, what we quote is what you pay.

No surprises, no hidden fees.

Your floors say “waterproof.” So why are they failing?

Here's what many homeowners don't realize: waterproof flooring doesn't automatically mean your entire flooring system is protected from moisture.

Even waterproof LVP can run into problems when moisture gets trapped underneath, the subfloor isn't properly prepared, or the wrong installation methods are used.

And in high-moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms, those details matter even more.

Before installing new floors, make sure you're considering:
✓ Subfloor moisture levels
✓ Proper moisture barriers when needed
✓ Manufacturer installation requirements
✓ Sealing and protection around vulnerable areas

The bottom line? A waterproof product is only one piece of the puzzle. Proper preparation and professional installation help protect your investment for years to come.

Saving money on installation sounds great…until you’re paying to install the floor twice. 😬

Some of the most expensive flooring problems we see start with a DIY project that seemed straightforward.

Improper subfloor prep can lead to movement and unevenness.
Missed moisture issues can cause damage down the road.

And installation or sealing mistakes can affect how the floor performs—and may even impact manufacturer warranty coverage.

Then there’s the cost that’s easy to underestimate: your time.

Demo, prep, installation, troubleshooting, cleanup…and potentially starting over when something doesn’t go as planned.

Professional installation costs more upfront for a reason. Done correctly, it helps protect your flooring investment, your warranty, and your weekends.

We’ve fixed a lot of DIY projects. Let’s not do that to you.

Hardwood or LVP? In Georgia, there’s more to the decision than just how it looks.

Humidity, everyday wear, maintenance, budget, and how long you plan to keep your floors all play a role.

Hardwood gives you the beauty and character of real wood, along with the ability to refinish many products over time. Engineered hardwood can also offer better stability around humidity than solid wood. LVP, on the other hand, gives you excellent moisture resistance, easy maintenance, and the look of wood—often at a more accessible price point.

Your floors are an investment, so warranty coverage matters, too. At After Five Floors, we pair applicable manufacturer warranties with a lifetime warranty on installation craftsmanship.

The best floor is the one that fits your home and the way you actually live in it.
