A once vacant progressive-era elementary school was rehabilitated into the Norman School Lofts, a multifamily residential building in the heart of a historic neighborhood in Kansas City, Mo.

The school was originally built in two phases, with the final phase completed in 1911. The original building is an example of restrained Jacobethan Revival architecture and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Restored limestone, original plaster moldings and wood floors preserve the building’s history, while new additions and amenities, including a pool with a sundeck and outdoor terraces, offer residents a modern living experience.

In 1961, Howard Nearing designed Project 1, a custom home in Mission Hills with a prominent columned entry, expansive windows and intricate detailing. Howard sought to create beauty in architecture with a commitment to design and service excellence. These principles remain ingrained in NSPJ’s core values today, shaping a legacy of design excellence and a strong focus on our clients.
