Timber Terrace is officially complete—and more importantly, it’s being lived in exactly as intended.

The homeowners are settled in, enjoying a slower pace of life, and welcoming their grandchildren into a home designed for gathering, connection, and everyday comfort.

One of my favorite parts of residential design is knowing that the drawings eventually become real spaces where families create new routines, celebrate milestones, and simply enjoy being together.

This home was thoughtfully designed to reflect both the beauty of its setting and the lifestyle of the people living in it—and hearing how much they’re enjoying this new chapter makes all of the hard work worth it.

Congratulations to these homeowners as they settle into their beautiful new home.

Timber Terrace is nearly complete in beautiful Sterling Ranch.
This custom home blends mountain modern architecture with natural textures including exposed rafters, stone, and warm wood detailing, creating a timeless connection to its Prescott surroundings.

It’s been a pleasure watching this one come to life alongside a great team of builders and craftspeople.

The AIA Grand Canyon Chapter enjoyed a memorable afternoon at the new Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria in Cottonwood, AZ on September 26.

Designed by Architecture Works Green, Inc., led by Rennie Radoccia, AIA, the hilltop destination is a remarkable example of design that connects community, landscape, and experience.

We were honored to be joined by AIA Arizona Executive Director John Czarnecki and AIA Arizona 2026 President-elect Dan Maher, AIA, who shared in fellowship and conversation with our members.

A big thank you to everyone who came out, and to Rennie and his team for creating such an inspiring place to gather and celebrate architecture in Northern Arizona.

Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria is not only a stunning piece of architecture, but also a must-visit destination for enjoying locally grown food and wine in the Verde Valley.

You’ve heard of Hearst Castle… but have you heard of Asilomar?

Julia Morgan wasn’t just California’s first licensed female architect. She was also a trained civil engineer, a rare combination even today. Her deep understanding of structure shows in every beam, arch, and stone she envisioned.

Most people know her for the grandeur of Hearst Castle. But along the windswept coast of Pacific Grove, she left behind a quieter kind of masterpiece. Asilomar.

Originally designed as a retreat for young women leaders, Asilomar’s lodges were built to belong to the land. Natural shingles, native stone, exposed trusses, and carefully considered proportions created space that was strong, calm, and lasting.

And here’s the magic

Asilomar is still open to the public. Still peaceful. Still powerful. It’s one of the only places where you can walk inside a Julia Morgan design, gather with family, and experience her legacy without spending a fortune.

It’s humble, not flashy. Sacred, not exclusive.

For me, it’s one of the most quietly transformative places in California

🏡 3 Passive Design Tricks Every Northern Arizona Home Should Have
In the high desert, smart design means working with the climate—not against it. Here are 3 proven passive strategies we use to create beautiful, energy-efficient homes built for our region:

☀️ 1. Southern Orientation = Free Winter Heat
Let the sun do the heavy lifting. South-facing windows collect low winter sun to warm your space—just add deep roof overhangs to block summer rays.

🪨 2. Use Thermal Mass to Store Warmth
Stone, tile, and concrete absorb heat by day and release it at night—perfect for our cool evenings. Bonus: it reduces energy swings indoors.

🌬️ 3. Design for Cross Ventilation
Harness those mountain breezes. Strategically placed windows and clerestory vents let cool air in and hot air rise out, naturally.

Good design pays for itself—especially when the sun and wind are on your team.

In 2016, I walked the streets of Florence not just as a traveler, but as a student of space, light, and intention. Every turn revealed a lesson in proportion, permanence, and poetry. The Renaissance city spoke to me through Brunelleschi’s dome, Alberti’s facades, and the symmetry and clarity of classical revival architecture. The buildings weren’t just beautiful, they were composed, like music, with rhythm and restraint.
What struck me most was the harmony between architecture and the surrounding art. The Uffizi’s collection mirrored the balance found in civic spaces like Piazza della Signoria—both guided by humanism, geometry, and a reverence for beauty. Even the shadow play on centuries-old stone taught me how light transforms surface.
Florence deepened my understanding that good design is not only about innovation, it’s also about lineage. It’s about knowing where ideas come from, and how to shape them anew in a modern context. The trip didn’t just inspire me. It anchored me in a tradition I’m proud to carry forward, even in the arid Southwest.

An historic Prescott treasure is returning to its original charm. Nestled in the heart of downtown, this early 20th-century home is being restored with care—bringing back timeless architectural details like full-width porches, bay windows, and traditional siding. The result blends classic beauty with modern craftsmanship, honoring the home’s legacy while making it shine once again.

As an architect, traveling is one of my favorite ways to observe other historic cities and structures. Charleston’s architectural beauty is truly something to experience, and I’m excited to share some of the photos we captured during our trip last December. The city is a showcase of Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture, all defined by intricate details, pastel facades, wrought ironwork, and iconic piazzas designed to catch the coastal breeze.

During our stay at Hotel Emeline, we explored some of Charleston’s most iconic landmarks, including the Pineapple Fountain, a symbol of Southern hospitality, and Boone Hall Plantation, where the deeply rooted history of the South comes to life. Coming from the Southwest, I’ve always been somewhat removed from Southern history, but experiencing it firsthand—walking through preserved homes, strolling down cobblestone streets, and standing beneath centuries-old live oaks draped in Spanish moss—was both eye-opening and inspiring.
Here are some highlights from our trip, including the incredible architectural details that make Charleston such a timeless and captivating city! So much of it reminded me of our own little historic hometown.
