April and May have been anything but normal. In fact our winter was not normal. Winter didn't have the snow for moisture or ground cover. A lot of my perennials did not survive the winter. We will need timely rains and warm weather to help things grow.
Now is the normal time to put in the annuals we so enjoy. I haven't even started to do much outside. It has been just too cold. I put my potato in on Good Friday! The ground was so cold! My potato plant is about 9 inches tall now but I covered it a couple of times and prayed a lot for it to survive. We should be able to plant our tomatoes and viney crops now.
The Fillmore Master Gardeners had their annual plant sale in the middle of May in Preston during Trout Days. We dressed in many layers and wished we had brought our stocking caps! The wind was cold and the temperature matched it! We did very well and plants were mostly gone by 11am.
We use much of the money on furthering education for the public that we raise from our plants sales. On June 12th the Fillmore Master Gardeners are hosting a Prairie Walk near Lanesboro, Watch for info. You will be able to compare and contrast burned and unburned prairie areas. You will learn the benefits of Spring Prairie Burns. You will also learn about Prairie Management styles. I am looking forward to this.
I have been to several greenhouses this past weekend. I learned that many of the plants planted around Mothers Day are not doing well and especially the warm weather plants.Most of the greenhouses will be able to help you. They still have plenty of tomatoes and annual bedding plants yet.
The fair season will soon be starting and I will fill you in on that in the next “On the Greener Side” article in June. Enjoy Spring.

Thank you to all those that braved the chilly weather and came out to buy plants today. Your support is greatly appreciated. Look for a couple events at the upcoming county fair and our booth there as well.
