As you grow up, you realize you don't hate things anymore. They either matter or they do not.
As you grow older the things that matter become the simple things. The first things that mattered.
A cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Playing frisbee with the family, jumping the the pool or lake.
Watermelon and corn on the cob.
Independence.
Family.
Fourth of July.
Today I am grateful for all the men and women that did the hard work, burned the candle at both ends, gave their lives and simply gave their best.
Those who fought against Kings and Tyrants. Those who fought evil so my children and I live free to fight the next battle.
Not a lot has changed of real meaning since that first Fourth of July.
Just some of us have changed.
Some, realize that it is the quiet, almost forgotten things that hold the real meaning as we grow up.
Others simply refuse to grow up.
Happy Birthday to the first real freedom ever known to man.
It was started as a noble experiment by a few men who were as genius as the best of men today, yet even further ahead of their time.
The experiment was to see if men could rule themselves.
The answer is yes. But because so many of us fail to see our own personal responsibility in this social compact, the experiment may yet prove otherwise in time.
Today, as I spend time with my family, sharing the simple things that never change -
-- We remember the sacrifice and endurance of the men and women past and present and make a new covenant to become the people we were born to be at this time, in this country and with all that is at stake.
We will focus on the things that matter and forget the things that do not.
May we all mutually pledge to ourselves and each other - our lives, fortunes and sacred honor this glorious day and seal it with the red
Glare of the rockets in this day's night sky.
