Don't wait to trim your oak trees? Why you ask.
Well during the warm weather months, oak trees are very susceptible to a disease called oak wilt.
Oak wilt is a fungal disease that produces sweet, smelling spores that oak bark beetles are attracted to. As they eat on the fungus, the spores get attached to the beetle. (like bees and pollen) The beetle then carries the disease to the next healthy oak tree with a fresh wound. Thus, infecting the tree with oak wilt. Once infected, the disease begins to block the leaf vessels limiting nutrients flow throughout the tree. Then your once healthy oak tree begins to wilt and die off. There is NO CURE for oak wilt. Plus trimming in winter the sap is down in the roots so added bonus less chances that the oak will bleed out to much sap. Because I'n spring and fall while sap is moving up or down too many cuts will cause it to bleed out and can kill your oak tree.
October through March is the best time to trim your oaks because in those cold months, the sap is in the roots to weather the winter cold months and the oak bark beetle goes dormant which helps reduce the spread greatly. So, get your oak trimmed now while the risk is very low.
