Meet our Associate, Caryn Farnum.

Caryn joined Studio Hillier in 2019 after working for ten years in New York City at award-winning practices, including Bernheimer Architecture and Guy Nordenson and Associates. She also co-founded Farnum and Lee Studio with her husband, Christopher Farnum. Their interior renovation of Webster Hall, the landmark East Village concert venue, was recognized as an NYCxDESIGN Award honoree in the “Shining Moment” category, which celebrates projects that capture the essence of New York City. The project also received the AIA|DC Historic Resources & Preservation Award.

As an Associate at Studio Hillier, Caryn has brought a refined design sensibility to educational, residential, retail, and sports and recreation projects, with particular leadership in interior architecture. Her notable work includes Lake Drive Residence in Princeton, the Zhao and Li Family Fitness and Exercise Center at The Peddie School, Newark School of Architecture and Interior Design, the Princeton National Rowing Center Addition, Veiled Collective, and Queen City Coffee Roasters.

Caryn received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Duke University, where she developed a lasting appreciation for architecture through Duke’s campus, a semester in Rome, and travels across Europe. Building on her early drafting classes at Princeton High School, she went on to combine her interest in human behavior with an awareness of architecture’s ability to shape experience, earning a Master of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. While in graduate school, she also spent semesters studying at Helsinki University of Technology in Helsinki, Finland, and the Sociedad Central de Arquitectos in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

With the perspective of the inhabitant always at the forefront of her work, Caryn brings a discerning eye to each project, drawing from both historical and contemporary influences.

At our Open Studio Celebration, the firm presented Bob Hillier with a custom illuminated model showcasing the offices and buildings the company has occupied throughout its 60 year history. Brought to life through the creativity of several talented individuals and the use of our office 3D printer, the model became a meaningful centerpiece that made the celebration even more memorable.

As we gear up to celebrate 60 years of architecture tomorrow at our Open Studio Celebration, we also want to honor and remember Barbara Hillier.

Barbara began her career as an interior designer at J. Robert Hillier, Architect, in 1976. She helped open the firm’s regional office in Philadelphia in 1988 and led a studio grounded in strong architecture, planning, and interior design work.

Barbara’s architectural projects have been celebrated for creatively synthesizing innovation and performance. Her human-centric approach empowered clients and stakeholders while driving her design toward unexpected solutions. She challenged her design teams to ask difficult questions and to challenge the status quo.

Barbara’s Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas in Irving, TX, is a vertically stacked landscape of meeting rooms that defies typological conventions. At the Becton Dickinson Campus Center in Franklin Lakes, NJ, a conventional building connecting two existing ones was reimagined as an insertion under a treasured central lawn to preserve it while still fulfilling a connective function between the marketing and research and development departments… over lunch. The Solebury School Abbe Science Center in New Hope, PA, is a sustainable, technologically advanced facility that adroitly engages the historic context and materials of the region.

Barbara began with people. Then, she thoughtfully layered context, history, and particulars of place into her solution. Her sensitive approach to design created spaces that are responsive, provocative, and inspirational. Given her unconventional educational path to architecture, Barbara believed in an inclusive design education that engages students, professionals, and the public. Her projects have been published widely, recognized with numerous awards from AIA chapters, including the coveted Pennsylvania AIA Silver Medal and The Chicago Athenaeum Award, and influenced other architects who followed in her footsteps.

As we continue celebrating 60 years of architecture, meet our Senior Associate, Alex Kim.

Since joining Studio Hillier in 2017, Alex has become a valued designer and project manager known for his creativity, problem-solving, and attention to detail. He has led and managed mixed-use, hospitality, commercial, institutional, and residential projects across the United States, China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, guiding work from concept design through construction.

Before joining Studio Hillier, Alex spent eight years in New York City with internationally recognized firms including Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), Gensler, GLUCK+, and RAFT Architects. After graduating from Syracuse University, he began his career at KPF, contributing to the iconic CTF Finance Centre in Guangzhou, China—one of the China’s tallest mixed-use towers. The 111-story, 1,739-foot supertall combines retail, office, residential, and hotel programs within a crystalline form ascending to the sky that references the surrounding skyline and local material traditions.

Alex’s portfolio also includes notable projects such as PS376Q, a primary school in Bayside, Queens; Barn with Aedicule, an 18,000-sf renovation and addition to a historic Catskills barn; and the Tower Health Executive Offices, an 18,000-sf renovation in Reading, PA.

Recently at Studio Hillier, Alex spearheaded the Lake Drive Residence, a sustainable custom home overlooking Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey. Focused on adaptive reuse, the project preserved the original foundations while reimagining the home to maximize lake views and improve functionality. Alex played an integral role in the design, detailing, coordination, and construction of the residence, which received the 2025 AIA Central NJ Design Award in the Residential Category.

In addition to his project work, Alex was the driving force behind the production of “Hillier: Selected Works,” a monograph published by ORO Editions showcasing 25 years of Hillier projects.

The breadth of Alex’s international and local experience continues to shape his thoughtful design approach, strong sense of scale, and meticulous attention to detail.

This past Saturday, some Studio Hillier employees and their young "interns" attended the annual Building Princeton event hosted by the Historical Society of Princeton. They selected and built a scaled replica completely out of LEGO pieces of a valued neighbor to our office on Witherspoon St, the Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church. Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church was one of two black Presbyterian churches in New Jersey begun in the 1830s. Studio Hillier is proud to sponsor and participate in this wonderful annual event alongside so many other young creative minds (hopefully aspiring architects) and talented LEGO enthusiasts.

As we continue celebrating 60 years of architecture, meet one of our Associate Principals, John Brewer.

John approaches architecture as a strategic balance between art, craft, and place. He believes strong design must be grounded in clear ideas while responding to the technical realities and constraints of the built world—resolved together, in situ. Throughout his career, he has maintained expertise across both the “art” and “science” of building, a commitment he continues following his return to Studio Hillier in 2022.

During his earlier tenure with Hillier Architecture in Princeton, John contributed to projects including the Guinness Collection Addition at the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ, and the Natatorium Addition to the Ian H. Graham Athletic Center at the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. After rejoining Studio Hillier, he worked on Phase 2 of the Natatorium project, reimagining the original pool space following its relocation.

While based in New York, John worked on large-scale and international projects, including the Comprehensive Cancer Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and MD6 at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. At Pelli Clarke Pelli, he spent six years on the reconfiguration of Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan, including lobby renovations, façade upgrades, and a new entry pavilion with a concourse connection to the World Trade Center transit hub.

At Studio Link-Arc, he contributed to the LUHU Cultural Center in Shenzhen, a 104,500-square-meter complex integrating cultural arts and library programs within the landscape.

Currently, John is working on the Newark School for Architecture and Interior Design in Newark, NJ, including the adaptive reuse of the former St. James Hospital and its ongoing expansion. He is also completing an addition to the Caspersen Rowing Center for the Princeton National Rowing Association in West Windsor, NJ.
