Important Business Update

It is with a heavy heart that we share this update. As we shared previously, Brandon's business partner in Illinois had a catastrophic fall in April. This has vastly changed our lives in many ways. Brandon has had to shift gears with his business plans, and though we had every intention and hope to return to Florida, we are saddened to inform you that we must cease operations effective immediately. The logistical and financial obstacles are simply too much to bear.

In the meantime, we wholeheartedly recommend Dan Sivak of Healing Roots Earthcare, LLC - he specializes in soil health and restoration, and permaculture-focused landscape design.

John Harley of Relush is also available for your lawn care needs. John and his wife Ashley are Babcock residents who specialize in lawn and garden maintenance, and we highly recommend their services.

We have every hope and desire to return at some point in the future. Babcock Ranch is so special to us, and we want nothing more than to share our love of growing food with this unique community. We look forward to the day we can return to serving you.

Good evening! It has been a while since my last update to this page, and I wanted to come and share what has been going on in my corner of the galaxy.

My family and I returned to Illinois at the end of March after a very fruitful season in SWFL. During the "off" season, I work in Chicagoland with my business partner, Brian Winkelman, at his company, Freedom Foodscapes.

Less than two weeks after we returned to IL, Brian suffered a life-threatening injury on a job site. By the grace of God he survived and is slowly recovering, but the road to a full recovery may be a long one. Needless to say it has been a very difficult time. Helping folks become self-sufficient by transforming their properties through food forestry and sustainable foodscaping is our shared passion, so of course it wasn't a question to take a more hands-on approach in operations for Freedom Foodscapes, which is something I never thought I'd have to do.

All of that said, I remain committed to maintaining our presence in SWFL as Food Forest Abundance of Babcock Ranch. We currently have a fantastic team in the Ranch that keeps things running while I am away. I also plan to be back full-time with my family between December and March, as we were this past season.

If you are looking ahead to this winter and wishing to grow food, now is a great time to set up a complementary consultation. I can come to your property, and we can discuss what is possible, get a design ready, and submit the design to the HOA for approval before my return this winter.

There is no better time than now to grow food! We are more committed than ever to help you create your dream yard -- with or without edible components. No job is too big or too small. We hope to hear from you soon!

And if you are the praying type, please keep my partner Brian in your prayers. Thank you!

We were blessed with an incredible opportunity to create an edible oasis for the Kindergarteners at Seacrest Country Day School in Naples. The parents of this private school got together to fund the project, and some of them even volunteered their time and worked with us on the install this weekend!

Some varieties of food include:

⁃ Navel orange tree
⁃ Tangerine tree
⁃ Papayas
⁃ Barbados cherry
⁃ Blueberries
⁃ Passion fruit
⁃ Society garlic
⁃ Lavender
⁃ Tropical spinaches
⁃ Tons of herbs
.. and much more!

We are so grateful for opportunities like this, where we can inspire the next generation to grow their own food. We look forward to coming back this week to talk to the kids about permaculture!

It's the season of love, and we love herb spirals!

An herb spiral is a raised garden bed that packs form and function into a small footprint. It’s the perfect focal point for more compact gardens, but can also be tucked into ornamental landscapes to supply fresh herbs for the kitchen.

Like any other permaculture ecosystem we design and install, herb spirals are low-maintenance and their unique shape allows for planting both sun and shade tolerant herbs in the same bed.

Message us to learn more about how we can help design and install an herb spiral on your property!

Edible options are aplenty in February for SWFL gardeners. Tons of vining plants, like beans, peas, melons, and squashes favor these milder temperatures. Tell us what you're planting this month!

"Does my HOA allow me to grow food?"

Every HOA has their own set of rules regarding landscaping, including planting fruit trees, berry shrubs, herbs, vegetable gardens, etc. For example, in Babcock Ranch, all plant types are allowed so long as they are non-invasive, and at least 75% of the plants in the ground on your property are native (anything in raised beds does not count!)

In Babcock Ranch, our clients have been able to introduce many varieties of edibles into their landscapes, from mango and avocado trees, to blackberries and blueberries. If it grows in SWFL, we can grow it in your yard!

Whether it’s Babcock Ranch or any other HOA, we are ready to work with you and your HOA to bring your vision of an edible oasis into reality!
